Tire tread depth in CA
#21
Raise your mug if you or someone you know, has ever been ticketed for treadwear at or lower then allowed by law? Tongue

Smile-D Does that work as a mug raising? And yes, I have known persons ticketed for insufficient tread depth.

I don't drive or ride on bad tires, but I know some folks who have and have been tagged for their lack of attentiveness.

I once got a Warning (potential $25.00 fine) for driving on public streets with slicks.
The dumps would have cost me at least $100.00 if I had opened them (then).

Tread is only useful to have in the rain and snow. Oftentimes autocross racers shave most of the tread from their tires to improve dry handling. If you're driving from California to Washington in the summer the chances of rain are very small, so unless you're down to the belts it'll probably be safer to drive with worn tires than with new ones. Just check the weather forecast before you go. Also, I'd say that the chance of a policeman bothering to ticket you for low tread depth during the summer are about the same as getting hit by lightning...why on earth would they waste their time on something that is not a safety issue? In any case, with a simple explanation that you're transporting a newly bought car and intend to replace the tires you'd have a good chance of getting off without a ticket even in the remote case that you were pulled over.

you can spot slicks from a block away, and that was breaking the law on purpose. the cops knew it.

No one accidently drives on slicks. And these days there are numerous DOT legal drag tires better than slicks.
