User Name and Password on External Drive
#1
I tried to boot from an external firewire drive just now and it wants a user name and password. I don't know how the account on the external drive was set up so don't know the user name and password. How do I find out what they are?

If you reboot from the internal drive, you can browse the Users folder on the external to find out what the user name is. No way that I know of to find out the password, that would be pretty insecure. I'd try obvious things first, like leaving it blank, the person's first or last name, etc. You can reset the password using a Mac OS X Installer CD/DVD.

Do you need to use the same major version of the CD/DVD installer disk as the HD installation for which you are resetting the password?

In other words, if you know the installed system is Tiger, do you have to find a Tiger DVD or can you use Panther or Leopard also to reset the password?
