What do you need on each end of the extension cable - 30 pin dock, USB, audio mini jack?

I didn't explain myself well enough in the first post.

This is the set up I am trying to improve. Ski helmet with speaker attachments Audio kit Unfortunately skullcandy did not pay apple for the licensing and their controller will only do volume.

So I figured I would do a retofit. I bought a Remote adapter. It works great but I need the controller to be near my face outside my ski jacket while my iphone is safely secure in my ski jacket pocket. So at the very least I need a 3' audio cable with control functionality.

Here is next dilemma. I am unsure of the directionality of the throughput controls. The remote adapter works great when the male end is plugged into the phone but will it work in reverse using a male to male 3.5 audio cable? Or will I have to get a male to female extender and then another short [5"] male to female extender? I do know that a standard cable (like those linked above) eliminate the controls when place inline before the controller.

But Control functionality is the key feature and I have not been able to find any extenders (male to male or male to female) that extend the controls.

It would also help that the place had a good return policy just in case they don't work correctly. So direct from china is not a good idea.
