Actually setting those up is a real problem, because they have a signature that will cause military pilots to freak out.
Back in the '80's we were testing a radar system that emulated a ZSU-23 (moible Russian AA gun system). And for the hell of it we 'lit up' an Air National Guard F-4 coming in for a landing at the local airport. We had usually practiced on commercial aircraft. Dude reacted PERFECTLY.... went to burner, dove for the weeds, landed 'expedite' style. We're lucky he wasn't carrying flares or chaff... we'd have had to pay for a bunch of house fires and a neighborhood aluminum foil TP-ing the likes of which have never been seen before. Once he cleaned out his flight suit he drove over to visit us. As it happens he was the Full Bird Colonel in charge of that air wing. We were very impressed with his command of invective. And, of course, very apologetic, and complimentary of his avoidance maneuver. |
