I'm going to be getting back into video editing more, just as a hobby. I'll probably go with Final Cut Pro. I would just run it on my Hac, but the recent FCP update requires 10.11and it's difficult to get this machine past 10.10.
This machine has an original i5, built in late 2009. The SSD has been upgraded once (Samsung 830) and the video card as well (GTX 660 OC). It's seen a RAM upgrade or two as well (four slots FTW.) Overall, it's still a decent machine. But getting a seven year old mobo and CPU to run the latest macOS is likely impossible.
I could buy a new mobo, CPU and RAM for about $500. It'd take a few hours to reconfigure and get it all setup. I don't have a lot of extra time anymore.
Thinking of getting a new MacBook Pro. 15", but at $2400-2800, I'm not so sure. An iMac is also an option, I suppose. But my monitors are currently wall mounted and I prefer that setup. I might get a new monitor as well, but have greatly preferred not having the monitor tied to the machine.
Comparing the benchmarks and specs on the new MBP video card (eg Radeon Pro 455), the one I have in my Hac currently smokes the MBP pretty well across the board. Of course, FCP is likely optimized better for the Radeon, so I'm not sure what the final results would be.
As far as storage goes, these projects will be pretty small. I can move them off to my server when I'm done. So 512GB in a MBP would be fine. Of course, if I use my Hac, I have plenty of storage in it.
I also use Adobe CS6 on this machine. Plus these days I have a second user on here that my wife uses. I also boot it into Windows and occasionally play games, but it would be okay if that came to an end.
What say ye?
