What's going to happen with the Republican Party?

What's going to happen with the Republican Party?

Are they going to try to hide the racist/fascist wing of the party under the table like the good ol' days? If so, how likely is it that they will succeed?

Will the "traditional" wing whither away and the Republican Party will be the same as the Trumplican Party.

Will they strongly fracture between "traditional" Republicans and Trumplicans?

Will the Party be an uncomfortable coalition loosely held together merely by the common desire to see the horrible libs not get anything done?

Something else?

The only way they'll change is if they start losing a LOT more elections.

If Trump survives the next two weeks he'll become their biggest nightmare. If he's either impeached or removed through the 25th they may drag that old Nixon roadmap out.

Not necessarily an apt analogy since Nixon's Silent Majority wasn't ever batshit crazy nor was Nixon.

Power and money. Separating them from those two things will be a good start. The power piece is forthcoming. McConnell and his ilk are now beholden to the Dem. majority. The money piece can come if Congress will pass some serious legislation to kneecap all the PACs. It could happen if there is a will to make it happen.

All of the grift and massaging of grift that comes with Congress and the presidency is out of control.

Half a billion dollars for one state's runoff elections? Who's beholden now… ????

I think they will stagger on as is for awhile, then break into competing “I’m crazier than you” movements. What I hope happens is that moderate Republicans will be able to survive in some form. Frankly, I think the same scenario may be in store for the Dems, too.

This is a great question, one that the Never Trumpers have been talking about. And I agree with the comments about the money.

But the elephant in the room is the media environment. Fox News makes money by making people crazy. Just like Facebook, blowing the horn of lies and grievance makes things crazier. And makes money. Right now the biggest threat to Fox is the even nuttier Newsmax and OAN. As Fox started to hint that maybe Trump had lost, some of the craziest people started watching the new places.

As long as there are channels pumping out crazy propaganda the GOP will be hard pressed to limit the crazy. Doing so would mean they could not win. Their choice is to be crazy (and get lots of campaign money) or say the truth and be declared heretic.

I just don't think this is true. The Dems have a different problem, but there is no Fox equivalent, nor is there the firehose of plutocrat funding.

If you think about it, the Dems are more than willing to criticize their own. Look at the Bernie/Hillary battle. The GOP, however, will instantly shun anyone critical of the team. Look at Romney.

Nice analysis.
