Comic book grading?
#1
I just stumbled across a lot of DC/Marvel Comic books from the 70s. Looking a few of them up they seem to be worth somewhere from between a couple bucks to several thousand depending on condition.

How does one figure out what condition they are in? They were just stored in a cardboard box together so they aren't in mint condition or collector grade, but they are for the most part in decent shape.

Anyone have any advice on what to do with them? Sell it as a lot?

Couple examples:
The Incredible Hulk #138, 131, 120
X-Men #56,66
Metamorpho #2,6
Green Lantern #56
Astonishing Tales #2,3,4

In my day, CGC grading was the last word in grading comics. That’s an involved paid service though, more appropriate if you suspect you have rarities or investment grade comics.

These folks seem to have a decent basic rundown of eyeballing the general condition of comics and how the condition relates to the traditional rating scale (Mint, Near mint, Very Fine, Fine, etc.).

Looks like they all fall into the 5.0/6.0 range. They were not stored in bags or sealed so they smell old and have tan pages.

Looks like it is going to be easiest to just take out the dozen or so with value over $20 and then sell the rest as a large lot.

I've read about CCC Grading as well. I've got a couple hundred Playboys from the 70s 80s and 90s.

Stopped in at the local Comic Book/Gaming store today to pick up sleaves and boards. Brought one of the comic books with me to make sure I picked up the right size. The clerk was flabbergasted that I was just holding the 'book and carrying it around.

I did look at a bunch that they had in their collection and I don't think most of mine are as bad as I thought they were. They said they do buy collections or individuals, but the guy that does that only works 1 day a week. I'm going to stop by when he is working and see what he thinks.
