what to do with POS
#1
As some of you may remember, I asked about my in-laws shipping their 86 Benz over here from overseas. As i recall, NO ONE recommended it. No one here. Not me. Not my friends. No one. But they were not to be deterred. So they brought it anyway.

Long story short, just got back from the mechanic who I asked to tell me whats wrong with it. Total came to over 5 grand! So I've now got a $2000 car (if I'm lucky) that needs $5000 in repairs that cost who knows how much to ship over here. WTH do i do with it now???

Leave it parked in a bad part of town, with the keys in the ignition...

Ouch. Sounds almost like a Benz I'm dealing with right now. (grrrr)
Except I didn't pay to have it shipped overseas, and my numbers aren't quite as bad.

The options I see are craigslist, eBay, consignment at a local dealer.
If it's a diesel maybe try joining a Yahoo! group, or a group specific to that model, and list it there. Example http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/diesel_mercedes/

If it is diesel, there's a group of biodiesel/greasecar enthusiasts that might be interested.
If it's gas, good luck, there is less demand for those.

If it was a diesel I might be more inclined to find a solution. as its a gasser i really couldn't care less.

Won't help much if it doesn't run.

Honestly I don't know how much it cost to ship here. You have a certain amount of space in the container for "your stuff". and "your stuff" can be anything...as long as it fits. So the car might not have been that much extra. Its just the fact that we TOLD them it was a stupid idea. This drives me up the wall.

If you want to lift a wrench, I bet that $5k could get cut down to $500 - 1000 plus your time.
