Multi Track Audio Record/edit Software

I attended a multimedia conference for producing journalistic photo/slideshows and videos. We used protools with m-box for our projects.

I'm looking for cheap or free simple multi track editor where I could combine naration and ambient sound/music on multiple tracks, and export as, say an mp3 to use in soundslides or similar.

It appears Audacity supports multi track. Is this the program to use? Do you recommend others?

seacrest, my dual 2.0 refurb came with iLife 5. Is that version of Garage Band sufficient? I've never used it.

yes Garageband is sufficient...

but you will need a mic and adapter to get
down to the 1/4 input on most macs.. as for
your ambient stuff.. you can try to use existing
zounds on GB or plug your keyboard in (using adapters
as required)... its a bit kluge-ed but it will
work... preferably you get a cheap mixer and plug
your mic and other stuff into it and route down
to your mac interface and adapt..

if you are used to protools, GB will have a little
learning curve... its different, but the basics
are the same..

good luck!

Garageband would do the trick, but you should REALLY upgrade to iLife 06 and get the newer GB ... the improvements are NOTICEABLE to put it mildly.

I'm not sure if Amadeus II is multi-track, but it sure is terrific. Audacity and I just don't get along somehow.

Audacity doesn't work well for me. GB is way better! It should do the job well, expecially if you use the "apple loops" (for what you are doing, it would save a lot of time). kj.

Thanks to all. I will give GB a go. Chas and seacrest, I'll upgrade if I can.
