Dead - Iomega 250GB FireWire/USB HD - $43 + shipping (Amazon)
Posted by: Carnos Jax
Date: May 15, 2006 02:34PM
Okay, from what I can tell, this thing is loud, and it doesn't have a power switch. No big deal if you're using it for back-ups, etc. The only thing I don't know is what kind of chipset it has. I've tried Googling, but to no avail. Anyone know anything about this drive?

P.S. - It's probably a price mistake, but can't hurt trying.

NOTE: that it is through an amazon third party seller.

antonline_com

NOT amazon directly. . .

so you have to pay shipping probably But amazon has a guarantee even through 3rd party sellers, non?

That's much cheaper than a bare 250GB drive costs right now. Either a red flag or a real good deal, you makes your choice and you takes your chances...

amazon does not give a fsck about their third party sellers

had a buddy try to buy an iMac thru one of them -- hes syas "i went to amazon but got it from a nigerian king for $200 less!'

i told him it would never go through, the price is the price -- didnt believe me until it finally came back as a no go. he contacted amazon, they didnt care and never got back to him.

this is as bad as amazons "reviews" section -- you dont acutally have to own the thing you are reviewing to leave a review...so i could say "this book sucks" without even reading it...

yes. . .but they have a guarantee such that if you get ripped off they will reimburse you. . .I believe. . .

it is true that they at times have "questionable" third party sellers. . .I've seen prices that are really TOO TOO good to be true but I avoid buying from those. ..

cus if it sounds too good. . ..etc. ..

That $42.59 price is pretty nutzso! Shipping is $6.99. Seller has 94% Positive feedback which is good. But then, the reviews at Amazon.com on the HDrive are almost 100% negative: loud fan, no ON/OFF switch, problems with recognition in Windows XP, etc. confused smiley

Who knows what to do?eye rolling smiley

If anyone orders it please post back as to whether the deal actually happened, or if it gets cancelled because of a price mistake.B)

orders won't go through Amazon. I tried. I figured that as a back-up for 2 120 gb OS X boot volumes, it would be just fine.

Ah hah, Racer_X did the job...and so it goes. A toilet-bowl deal gone flush.tongue sticking out smiley

And jdc is right about Amazon and 3rd party resellers, plus the Amazon feedback can be from a source who didn't actually order the item, or have the item. They don't require an invoice number when submitting feedback.thumbs down

When I order through Amazon.com I try and stick with Amazon, unless it's something like a used book (their 3rd party resellers for books are generally very reliable...I've purchased more than 25 books of various genres over the years from those nice people). Amazon.com had a hard to find PCI-Express FireWire board in stock, and it was the lowest price I could find, last time I ordered from them, for example. That order went through without any problems, arriving some 10 days before their ordering system said it would via UPS Ground.

I guess that this deal here proves that when it sounds too good to be true, it is.

LOL ... I got stuck on the phone, and as a result didn't post this...

The chipset is liable to be Prolific. At least, that's what the one for the similar 120GB drive is... and from xlr8yourmac.com's database, it's pretty flaky.

For what that's worth at this point...

From the problems the Windows folks were having, I would have guessed that the chipset was not Oxford (there's another chipset, can't remember which, that's also good). Thanks for the insight PeterB. Glad I didn't order it. Did anyone here manage to put in an order?
