Google Earth, Google Maps, Yahoo or Mapquest?

Who do I believe? The odd part is that Google Earth & Google maps have the largest discrepancy of the group.

Example: Driving From the same addresses in VA to MD

Google Earth: 518 miles, 8 hrs 24 min.
Google Maps: 514 miles, 10 hours 12 mins
Yahoo Maps: 517 miles 8 hrs 24 min
Mapquest: 522 miles, 9 hours, 8 minutes

I have tested this on many other locations, and they always vary substantially but consistently.

I suppose an average might be prudent, but I drive fast and have a large bladder.

Who do you trust?

i go by my own driving habits. on interstates w/ no large urban tie up areas, i can travel 100 miles in 90 minutes at about 72mph average.

I trust your bladder.

It's telling me that driving for > 8 hours is not good for you, without taking a bathroom break!

But seriously, I suspect it's because they all use different algorithms for trip planning? And don't take the same route? I would assume the longest of the group is likely to be the most accurate.

There is absolutely NO WAY to compute the actual time it will take because none of the above services can take into account:

1. Your speed/driving style
2. Traffic
3. Construction
4. Weather
5. Accidents on the road

or any of the zillion other factors involved. All of these services have somewhat different times only because they are making different ASSUMPTIONS about how fast you will average, how often you will stop/have to stop, traffic and so on.

A polite suggestion: stop trying to beat the land-speed record. Drive in a relaxed but aware state and don't worry about time. Take some great music along and really enjoy the drive.

I use Google maps pretty extensively and find the directions are fine but they are often way off when it comes to time estimates. I suspect they are basing it on driving speeds no more than 55mph on highways.

From Chicago to Cleveland it gave me a drive time of 6hrs 4 minutes. I made it in 5 hours and 5 minutes.

From Chicago to Indy it gave me a drive time of 4hrs 10 minutes and the trip took 3hrs and 15 minutes.

I gave up on Mapquest when they stopped being able to locate my HOME address. The system just stopped recognizing it one day.
