can you decypher this 1982 song?
Posted by: space-time

I have received a puzzle, and if I solve it, I enter for a drawing to win a small prize... the problem is that I have no clue what song this could be.

Any idea? Thanks

This Cryptogram is a song in substitution code. For example, SONG might be AUFN (A for an S, U for an
O, ect..) Goal: Decode the artist and title by decoding the lyrics.

The only thing I can see right off is that at the end of the title and artist (after the hyphen) is "KVWGT KVWGT".. same word. So, Duran Duran?

If that's the case, you have six letter pairs decoded D-U-R-A-N = K-V-W-G-T.

Well, that, and Stephanie can probably tell you the whole set of lyrics.... just from the word length pattern :-)

Yeah it's definitely Duran Duran. I caught that before I read any of the other posts. I'm positive it's Hungry Like the Wolf like Meg said.

Too easy. Good luck & if you win are you gonna share the prize? ;)

It was "1982 song" that was irresistible. Since I like a lot of 80s music, I was hopeful that it would be from an artist that I liked.

I used to be able to do those cryptograms in the newspaper just by staring at it for about a minute. Most phrases this long are very easy. The hardest ones are the ones with no short words at all or any of the 'common' giveaway words. T-H-A-T is a good one - ends and begins with 'T' - that will quickly settle THAN, THIS, THEN... PEOPLE is a good one - two Ps and two Es. After you do a few hundred of these puzzles, those common words just jump out at you and the rest falls into place.

Well what does that have to do anything? Was the contest for a song in the top 100 of 82? If not, then who cares?

Here's the history of Hungry Like the Wolf for you: [en.wikipedia.org]

It IS interesting to note that it wasn't one of their biggest hits, yet it is pretty much THE iconic Duran Duran song.

Here's a question for ya - what was the only James Bond theme song to hit #1? (no googling)

LOL - I showed this thread to a Duran friend of mine and he, being much more the historian than myself, pointed out that, "It's not listed in 1982 100 because it wasn't big until the end of 82. Therefore, it's listed in 83"

Still not relevant but interesting to me nonetheless.

Ohhhhh, snap!

And I'm guessing View to a Kill. Not a big fan of the movie, but I really liked the theme.

At the other end of the scale was Live and Let Die. I didn't care for that movie either, and really hated the song. Some of the worst lyrics, too, to boot. Even Vaughn Monroe's theme was far better.

Though I loved the theme, I will say that the line "...such a cold finger..." always cracked me up. But Ms. Bassey's singing could cover a multitude of lyrical sins.

And one day I'll have to crack open my Duran Duran dvd to revisit Girls on Film. Yum!
