60 Mile Bike Ride
Posted by: ztirffritz

My wife and I did a 60 mile bike ride through the lower Yakima Valley yesterday. Thought I'd share some photos. I'm sore and sunburned now.

Hop Fields. The right side has been harvested already.

Canal bridge to carry water over water...not something you see everyday.

Vineyards

All of the riders' bikes collected in a school gym in Prosser WA.

Looks like a great day for a bike ride in the Eastern Washington Countryside *(:>*

The scout bike ride here yesterday unfortunately resulted in one of the boys colliding with a car and going to the hospital.

Are those nets or something in the hops field?

That looks pretty dry. Is agriculture only possible with irrigation?

Hi Frank, those pics are great. I'm envious of your adventure!

freeradical, yes this is only possible via irrigation. This area receives 6 inches of rain per year, is classified as a desert, and until irrigation there was just sagebrush.

If I have time this week I'll scan some early pics of the area from the turn of the century and post them.

No, the hops grow up twine (made from coconut husks believe it or not) and they are harvest as a whole unit. The hop cones are separated from the vines and the twine at the processing facility where the hops are also dried. The hops are later bailed or pelletized. The pellets look like rabbit food. During hop harvest the entire valley smells like hops. One of the best smells in the world.

As we were riding through the vineyards the smell of grapes was incredible. It smelled like artificial grape scent. Think Grape Nehi and you're pretty close to what it smells like.

I guess this was the perfect weekend for a little two-wheelin'. I'm sore after only 30 miles yesterday, picturesque in a different way than your ride, ztirffritz:

'only' 30 miles?
How many people have EVER ridden 30 miles? Not many.

Nice stuff.
I basically quit distance riding 5-6 years ago and My Waterford is rotting resting in the attic . . but I've been getting the urge to do the Hilly Hundred this year-- the bikes-in-the-gym pics bring back memories.

let me know when you do an Iron Man, and you can chat with my ex-wife. Thousands do 200 milers every year between Seattle WA and Portland Or. Or Seattle and Vancouver BC.

I did a 27-miler this weekend as well on a rails-to-trails trail near Elkins, WV. Beautiful ride and great weather!
