Yard Sale score this weekend

I leave the house every Saturday in search of that once in a lifetime Yard Sale score. Merrimac borders on a fairly affluent, sometimes brand snobbish town and the main reason we go there first is the quality of the items for sale. Unlike the usual offerings of chipped ash trays, rusty tools and stained kids clothes, lots of higher end "junk" is put out for sale. I find that we usually get two types of sales:

1. Based on the price of the items you know the only goal here is to make everything go away regardless of what it's worth.

2. Renters/college kids who have decided that because it is an affluent community everything is priced at almost retail in the hopes that buyers have more money than brains.

I like sale number one and this weekend there was no shortage of goodies to be had.

Saturdays two top scores (other than the large box of popsicle sticks for a dime) were a Harman/Kardon iSub with SoundSticks in very good condition for $3.

Next up was a spanky new-2003 vintage-sealed-in-box BenQ FP747 17" flat panel monitor in beige!

When I looked for the price I couldn't believe it was marked $1! When I went to pay I asked if the price was correct and was told it was. I still gave the box a little shake to listen for loose bits rattling around (hey, rich people lie too!) before I parted with my buck. Granted 17" is rather smallish these days but it'll go well with the G4 Mini media center and most importantly...it was a dollar. big grin smiley

Last year I got a core2duo laptop (yeah, it was a Dell) for $3. Yes, that's THREE dollars. The lady said it was "broken". I figured it was worth it for parts. Turns out it just had a virus that prevented it from booting. I rebooted with the hidden recovery partition and voila, good (or bad) as new. I could have gotten about $300 for it, but instead gave it to my sister who needed it.

I went to a yard sale this past weekend and found a pair of dumbbells.

They just sat there when you asked questions about items. Typical local.

I sold my circa 2006 MacBook at my garage sale a few weeks ago for $10. It had a bad logic board, meaning that the Mac would boot up fine and then display the "white screen of death." The data was all still there; I just couldn't see anything on the display (ditto using an external monitor).

It also had a dead RAM slot and the hinge that attached the screen to the keyboard was broken.

The guy who bought it for $10 was a PC guy who just wanted to "mess around" with a Mac and see what he can do with it.

I also sold this behemoth to a happy HS student for $50.

We usually hit Newburyport first and then down 113 through Groveland, Haverhill and finally down 110 back to Merrimac. Which side of the bridge are you on, Groveland or Bldg 19?

Bldg 19. I feel itchy every time I go into that place.
