i know the question is subjective but ...
i have only owned the ipod classics before and never played any games or had wifi (and no iphone).
i want the touch for it's skype abilities primarily.
all the other stuff the touch can do (i am assuming they are identical outside the storage capacity) is so new to me that i just have no frame of reference about how much space will do.

so in your opinions...
is 8gigs horribly small or does it suffice?

It will suffice. The first time you run out of space you'll kick yourself though.

iPod touches are only supported with OS updates for around two years anyway. Pick the cheapest model and get used to buying a new one every couple years.

If you don't have a large music collection and don't plan to load it up with videos, 8GB would be fine. But given that it's $70 more for the 32GB (there is no 16GB version anymore), I'd have to say that the 32GB is a much better value (and might hold its value more if you want to sell it in the future).

I have an iPod Classic 120G that I used for a backup drive and a music / video player. The media takes up only 32G.

When I switched to using an iTouch, selecting the media was a difficult piece of triage.

Gareth: I was not aware of that. I change my vote to the 32 GB model. However, I will argue that the size of the music library doesn't matter. Just make a smart playlist with some rules lik emost listened to and greater than 4 stars and limit it to 4 or 6 GB. That's more music than anyone person should be able to listen to before they will want to sync again and get new music. I could state my argument better but let's just say that you all get my point.

I max out my 8gb iPod Touch every other day. Definitely wish I had a bigger one, though I'm sure I could gain some space by deleting a bunch of apps that I don't use much. When I take it on vacation (instead of a laptop) I definitely wish I had more space so I could have a wider variety of media to choose from.

I have a 16 GB iPhone, and wish I would have sprung for the 32 GB version.

Why 32?

My 20GB mp3 player is just about the right capacity for listening during exercise, at the beach, poolside, etc.

The iOS takes up at least 1.5GB.

I'd want to leave at least 10GB for apps, pics and video on a Touch.

For me, the 32GB version is the lowest capacity that would do the job if I wanted to replace my 20GB player with a Touch.

I have several 8 GB Nanos and would not buy any new 'pod that has less than 16.

Oddly I can't seem to fill my 20 GB 4g iPod though . . .
