I think that is really neat. Now anyone can write a book and actually get it to a market. I assume the publishing part is free, and would guess that B&N gets a cut of each download sold, and that is how they would make money on the deal.

Don't know if this is typical but here's their royality pricing:

Pricing and Payment Terms
Barnes & Noble may update or alter the Pricing and Payment Terms at any time and changes will be effective and binding on you on the date thirty days from posting, as described in the PubIt! Terms & Conditions.

Publisher will set a List Price for each eBook between $0.99 and $199.99.

Publisher will be paid a royalty off the List Price according to the following terms:
For eBooks with a List Price at or between $2.99 and $9.99
65% of the List Price
For eBooks with a List Price at or below $2.98 or at or greater than $10.00 (but not more than $199.99 and not less than $0.99)
40% of the List Price
Publisher will, at all times, ensure that the eBook List Price:
Is no greater than the eBook's List Price at any other retailer, website, or sales channel.
Is no greater than the eBook's print edition (if applicable).
Complies with the minimum and maximum pricing policy as stated above.
Sample royalty calculation:
List Price: $9.99 - Publisher Royalty: $6.49
List Price: $20.00 - Publisher Royalty: $8.00

Hi, Dennis R's wife here,

I recently published a book on Smashwords.com. It was free to submit it as a Word.doc. They reformatted it to sent it to various ebook retailers such as: Apple iBookstore (Germany, US, UK, France, Canada), Barnes & Noble, Sony, Apple, the Diesel eBook Store, Kobo, Borders (via Kobo), Stanza, Aldiko, FBReader and Word-Player and will soon be available at Amazon.

They supplied a free ISBN number and I have full control as to where it is sold. Depending on where that is, I get between 50% - 80% . It has sold at Smashwords for $9.99 and I get $7.99 out of it. I'm very happy with them so far. Their percentages were higher than other suppliers that I had checked and there were no up-front costs.

Here's the link to my book page, where you can sample or purchase the book: [www.smashwords.com]

Reminds me of the fake SNL commercial where the kid uses a Mac to make a brochure that says "Pubic Library"
