3-4 deer and one bunny...

I walk out the front door a few minutes ago and a bunny darts across the walk into the junipers. I look to the right, towards the pasture, and see 3 or maybe 4 deer, hard to tell how many exactly because they would appear and disappear, running like crazy. A neighbor said she saw 7 deer in the same area the other night, so they must like it here. Haven't seen any wild turkeys in a few years, but we do have hawks and many other big and little birds. Fished another snake out of the skimmer basket the other night. Possums, chipmunks, and a boatload of squirrels are usually around. We have had a huge snapping turtle, raccoons, and even, very rarely, a fox. I am sure there are coyotes, too, but luckily we rarely see them. I feel like I live in a zoo. grinning smiley

And, that isn't counting all the domesticated animals like donkeys, horses, sheep, goats, llamas, dogs, cats, etc., that live in the area.

We have that every day and I'm in the city! Still odd to see the occasional deer carcass on the Lodge Freeway (in the city of Detroit).

Mr. Lahey: A lot of people, don’t know how to drink. They drink against the grain of the liquor. And when you drink against the grain of the liquor? You lose.

Randy: What the @#$%& are you talking about?

Hey, I didn't have my camera in my hands when I went out. I was just checking to see what the weather was like, and so I was unprepared to take pics of all the fauna. I wish I could get a good pic of the twin dear fawns that live around here. We have been watching them grow up, and boy were they cute when they were tiny. Supposedly they were born in one of our neighbor's backyards.

If I ever do get pics, I will be sure to post. grinning smiley

I have seen foxes, a coyote, lots of raccoons, and several bunnies in the Baltimore city limits, and our local park has been host to hawks, an eagle, a merlin, kestrels, ospreys, several kinds of heron, a wood duck, lots of geese, ducks, grebes and a very confused cormorant. It's amazing what you can see if you are looking! The one bird that is hard to find around the park is a Baltimore oriole.

I will loan you my oriole. He comes every year and pecks incessantly at my garage windows, in the spring. He then seems to either go someplace else, or finally decide to give up banging on my windows. Happens every year. I think maybe he and Mrs. Oriole might nest in the trees just outside of the garage, and perhaps that is why he goes crazy on the windows. He is very pretty, even with his banging on the windows.

The orioles bang the windows here, too.
They are supposedly trying to drive off the mating competitor that they see a reflection of in the glass.
A mating ritual that usually stops once there are fertile eggs in the nest.

OK, that makes sense, as he will also attack the side view mirrors on any car left in front of the house. While doing his attack, he also usually leaves some little white "presents" on the side of the lucky car. Nice.

AD, those pictures are GREAT! I can't imagine how they came to have their first encounter, but it seems they have become big buddies.
