If you don't speak mexican, you're out of luck.
A little thing she didn't mention.
I've worked a lot harder, for a lot less.

That's a lot of money for planting plants. I find that a
little hard to believe that she can't find anyone to do that.
That's more than probably 95% of the people in NC make per
hour. That's actually more than the union maintenance jobs
pay at Phillip Morris tobacco. I believe she says she'll pay
as much as $34, tsee quote below. She would have no problem
finding people to do that in NC for $20/hr.

Damn straight I would. Being outdoors, excellent physical activity, no "work" to take home at night and getting a decent chunk of change...sounds like heaven to me.

$34/hour is nice, but could you afford a place to live in SoCal on that salary?

I could rent-to-own one of those machines that plants that you ride
for about that much - so, yes - that would be a good deal.

As for "speaking Mexican" - oh forget it.

SpaceScape asks.:
"Is mexican a language? hee hee... Now it's my turn to be an a**... haa haa... I think they speak spanish.."

Yes, absolutely, a lot of native language woven into a dialect of Spanish.
And despite popular belief, they are neither Hispanic, nor Latino, they are mexican/native american, they are very proud of their heritage.
Your race is not determined by what language you speak.

Wish I could jobshare and do it halftime.

That kind of work is rewarding, but unless you've done it you have worked outside dusk until dawn you have no idea how it wears on you. It is not a particularly good kind of tired, especially for a hired laborer.

I grew up on a farm and worked it for a while, and even the tremendous rewards of the outdoors, and they are tremendous, it is extremely hard to do physical labor all day long, day in and day out.

You could find an apartment or fixer upper house in parts of So Cal if you were making $70 K

But even that amount of cash with no benefits is not exactly the road to riches. One pulled muscle and you are out of work and your hourly wage until further notice.

I also wonder about these employers whining about not being able to find workers at "decent" wages who refuse to offer any kind of benefits.

I could only do that type of hard labor for a year or so. But at that pay rate, you can live in SoCal no problem. In fact you could actually buy a house in Rverside/San Bernadino counties on that income.

I make less that $34 hour and can almost afford a house in LA county, almost.

And as mentioned, one slight slip up and you are out of work for a few days, possibly even weeks. I did farm work as a kid, it was tough enough then and I had energy to burn back then.

Planting plants sounds like an easy job.

The job is actually digging holes. With a shovel, not a back-hoe.
Back breaking work.

I'd still do it, though. :-)

Can they use help from mid june to mid august?

I'd do it... but don't want to give up my "regular" job...

I've seen these plant planting people in the rich hoods. They pull up
the old ones and replant new ones ever few weeks. Heaven forbid having
old plants at the gated entrance, while people are starving to death
somewhere. I've seen whole flatbed trucks covered with new flats of
plants ready to go in.

Hmm, that's what I make now. A boring, repetetive, back breaking job in the hot sun and polluted air? No thanks, I like my desk job. I doubt they get all the other benefits I do. But if I had fewer skills I guess I would do that and be amazed I was making that much.
