Photoshop question

I have students and friends that have been sending me Photoshopped images that are saved as JPEG's to their desktops. When they email me, tho', the image will display in Entourage but when I save it to my desktop and try to open it in PS I get a "Could not complete your request because it is not a valid Photoshop document" message. The one thing is that they're all from Windows machines and, again, they are saving them to their desktops. And, why are they coming thru with a .PSD suffix instead of JPG and why would that not be a "valid" PS document? Anyone know how to avoid/fix this? TIA

I'm using PS CS2 on OS 10.3.9. The versions they are coming from are PS7, CS, and CS2 but on Windows.

Tell them to save it as .PSD not JPEG.

If you are saving it as a .jpg change the tag to .jpg and try it. This has worked for me anyhoo....
