Last few days my belly button has been hurting. Kind of the surrounding area rather than the inside. I know that sounds weird. Anybody ever had this problem? I know, I know, go to the doctor, but I like to get any advice I can beforehand.

You may have an infection of your belly button... (really!).
Foreign matter can get in there, and start to get all icky.

Or it could be something completely different...

How much pain we talkin'? "A little sore" or "OW OW OW!".

I wouldn't run to the doctor JUST yet.. but do keep his number handy.

Do you have a bulge? Does it get worse with standing or straining? Any nausea? Ever had it before? Does it get better with ibuprofen? Any sort of draingage from the bellybutton (I know it sounds weird, but can happen).

Everything is clean, no drainage. It hurts if I touch it and I do have nasea, not real bad but it was the first thing i thought of when I woke up this morning.

With the nausea too... I'd get that doctors phone number out.

I was thinkin more "outside pain".. but it sounds like it may be more innards related. Drop your doctor a call and ask HIM if you should come in, or what else to look out for.


I have no idea if it could be related; but a friend of mine had a hernia around his belly-button. That is, his intestine tried to make an escape through the hole in the muscle wall that the belly button is the middle of...

My first tought was a hernia too. Be careful with it. Good idea to see a doc if it persists.

I would make an appointment with the doctor.

I prefer to err on the side of caution.

If it is nothing then no big deal but if you can catch something early. . .


If it is a hernia, the doctor should be able to determine it now.


but that is just me.

Nifty, hernia right before i start moving my entire house. Ok, thanks for the good advice. Now I just have to decide if I want to go in now and risk him saying, "don't move anything" vs waiting and possibly doing more damage but getting the house move done.

Dude.. you should probably be aware...
If you have a "blowout" with a hernia, your risks are a lot worse than just not being able to move stuff...
Try death by septocemia.. (sp?).

Heck, what you've got might have NOTHING to do with a hernia..
But if it DOES, you're WAY better off knowing NOW!

You may be pregnant.

I agree with all of the above posters that it could be a hernia of the belly button. These are more common than you think. My friend got a new girlfriend and hit the gym bigtime. Situps did him in and he had to have emergency surgery to repair his belly button hernia.

It's the second area in order of occurence in men...go have it looked at.

Oddly I've had an infected belly button before. It was a kind of fungal infection akin to athlete's foor that caused pain because the skin was raw and chapped inside my belly button.

When I called the doc she had me come in right away. Said the kind of infection I had was relatively standard and gave me cream to make it beter. She had me come in right away because pain in the belly button could be only symptom of lots of other more serious problems.

So yes, call your doctor ASAP.

All day, every day, ever since a thoracic disk bulge (T11/12) in early 2004.
Any back problems? Would you describe the pain as being in a "band"? Stomach feeling tight? Any lifting in the past few days?

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.

A few years ago my "innie" became and "outie" presumably due to a strain and although it really didn't hurt, it popped out whenever I coughed. I finally went to the doctor who told me I had an umbilical hernia that in time could result in a bit of my intesting getting pinched in the gap and becoming infected. I had the surgery done as an out patient and have had no problems since. The only downside is that my belly button is not as "attractive" as it once was.

. . .but it IS attractive. . .to an outie lover. . .NON?
