I'm having trouble getting a definite answer on this.
Apple offers a 120, but is there something larger that will work? What about the 160 GB Seagate?

why not get an external FW bus powered drive?

Apple only offers:

100 gb, 5400 rpm
120 gb, 5400 rpm
100 gb, 7200 rpm

There may be larger 2.5 drives out there, but they are not BTO options for the MBP. After I had my G4 PB for a year, I swapped the 40 for a Seagate 100, and it has worked great, though the upgrade was a little painful.

I'm getting a MBP next week, and I'm going to opt for the 100 gb 7200. The extra 20 would be nice, but I'm getting this laptop to be fast, and I imagine the extra drive speed to make a big difference. I certainly noticed a difference upgrading from the 4200 rpm in my g4 PB to the 5400 Seagate.

To me that sort of defeats the purpose of a laptop: everything in a nice portable package. If I had my way, the power supply would be built-in, too! (I know, I know, it would be too hot)

I put the 7200 100GB in my TiBook (replacing a 4200 drive), nice improvement.
I'm considering the 5400rpm 160GB drive for the Macbook (when I get it) , since I figure it will be so much faster than the TiBook (800mhz) that I won't miss the extra HD speed of a 7200 and the extra 60GB will be nice to have.

Forget the MacBook Pro then, you need a 190/5300/3400 which had an optional expansion bay power supply!

i mean wtf are you planning on keeping on your MBP?

if you need hundreds of gigs, then you should get a tower...

and volcs -- everything i have read shows little speed up from 5400 to 7200 -- or at least a much smaller speed up than going from 4200 to 5400

and you should BTO from someplace that doesnt charge tax, or get the stock version from amazon.com with no tax, no shipping and a $200 rebate -- then take that $200 and put it towards a 160 gig drive and a $10 2.5" USB 2 case for the older drive

Wow - all good information. Man, 200gb in a laptop... imagine that.

Thanks for the tip - I didn't know that about the speed increase - I figured it would make a big difference, but I will check out the benchmarks, if I can find 'em.

I'm getting it through work (university), so there is no tax, and it will be edu pricing. I think it comes out to $2399 or something with the 120 gb drive.

And I'll bet you won't notice the extra 7200rpm HD speed, especially with the slower processor.

The difference from 4200 to 5200 is much greater than from 5400 to 7200.

That's even worse! I'd have to lug a screen and keyboard around, too. Plus the battery life on those is dreadful.
