I remember Ross Perot invested several million dollars at the time. Wonder if that got paid back, lost his investment or got stock options or what.

PS: I meant to add that the work he did with the NEXT may be paying off in the MacPRO so the NEXT was not in vain.

Next did yield him a spot back at Apple plus what was it 400 million for Next, and the basis for OSX. He got to turn up his nose at the board of directors by stealing Apple employees to work for him when he was still on the board. So maybe it wasn't all in vain.

Besides the cube, how about other "themes" that Steve gets obsessed with that surface over the years? There's the cube theme. The "Apple-logo-where-no-normal-person-would-ever-bother-to-put-one" theme such as on the feet of the very earliest Mac 128 though I don't know if they ever reached production, on the back of the first iMac, the rubber pad on the bottom of the mini, where else? Sort of like a graffiti artist.

Don't understand how you consider the NeXT to be a failure. Sure, the company no longer exists, but look at it's 'offspring'. Plus, a lot of very talented folks came from the NeXT campus. If anything, it was the launchpad for the current Apple Computer's rebirth, including OS X. Perhaps a little history review would help? [www.ex.com]

As for Perot [en.wikipedia.org] , he's a multi-billionaire. No one forces him to make investments and he certainly makes his own picks!

The "FAILED" NeXT OS is the core of OSX.
The "FAILED" NeXT OS is still being used to this day at JPL.
The "FAILED" NeXT OS still does stuff that no other OS does.

The email logo for one of the releases was exactly (or almost exactly) what the mailbox
in Mail.app looked like for v1.x.

BGnR - are they running NeXT on Intel or 68000 at JPL? Can you link to that? I'd be curious to read about it. Also--- interesting to note that Stevey carried around that ThinkPad for a long time - and wasn't it running NeXT?

Yep, SJ was running NeXT on his ThinkPad.
Last time I checked with my bud who has the JPL connection they were running a mix of Cubes, Pizza Boxes, and Intels. Some of the Cubes, and Pizzas were running 68000, 020's, and 030's upgrades.
