More ticks!!!
Posted by: ztirffritz

My wife found this "pebble" on the floor in our dining room. It started to run away. She mustered her courage and captured it. I think that this is a tick that was feasting on my dog and it had its fill and let go. It looks just like a smooth river stone but it has legs. I gave both the cat and the dog flea/tick collars and a treatment of anti-tick juice (I don't know what it is really called) from the Vet. This is the worst year for ticks that I've experienced in the 8 years that I've lived here.

One of my dogs got one of them little buggers last month. We just bout some liquid at PetSmart that you apply to the back of their necks (I have 2 dogs and 2 cats). Over the next two days, we found a few dead ticks around the house...yuck! Thankfully, we seem to have zapped 'em all.

We live on the edge of parkland so there are tons of ticks here. The only tick collars that work are the tickarrest and preventic collars. The contain amitraz which does not come with other collars. Preventic is only available from vets. None of the "flea and tick collars" work.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

good to know. our cats are indoors only, but as foster parents for the local shelter, we get asked a lot of general questions by new pet parents.

We call those "Seed Ticks" around here. This is the worst year I've ever seen for ticks too. I
use Advantage on house cat for flea but try to keep Snowie the outside dog with aflea and
tick collar and keep dusted with either Sevin dust or regular flea and tick powder, about the
same thing. Anyone try any of the sprays you connect to a garden hose and spray around
the house that's suppose to cut down on fleas and ticks?

Does anybody have any freaking idea of what purpose the existence of these things serves?

We used to have two big Rhodesian Ridgebacks that lived mostly outside. We were forever getting those things off them. We even had a special "tick rock" that we kept on the fence post. Three guesses what the "tick rock" was used for. grinning smiley

I was at Grandma's in Northern Minnesota and got a burrowing tick. She yanked out a knife and did surgery. I passed out. Long time ago.

Still cracks me up:

God: Noah! Thou shalt build thyself an ark, measuring 300 cubits in length!
Noah: [Jotting this down with a jumbo marker] 300 cubits, give or take.
God: Exactly 300! And thou shalt taketh two of every creature!
Noah: [Writing it down] Two creatures.
God: Two of every creature!
Noah: Even stink beetles?
God: Especially stink beetles!

winking smiley

blooz, these are parasites. As with any other organism, they don't really have a "purpose", other than self-preservation and continuation of their own species. (In the greater sense, their major purpose is probably to weed out the weaker members of the species they feed upon-- in the same way that predators weed out the weaker members of a prey species.)

Keep a few chickens in the house and they'll eat all the ticks, right off the dogs.

Of course then you have a lot of chickensh!t to clean up.

This will widen the discussion: so what is the purpose of our existence then? Are we somehow better than ticks?

That is the exact response my wife had to that question.

OMFG! Cracked me up!

I still like this convo better:

Noah: "God?"
God: "Yes, Noah?"
Noah: "What's a 'cubit'?"
