I'm going to have to switch to Verizon Wireless soon. My phone choices are the Treo 700P, Treo 700W and the Moto Q. I'm leaning towards the Q because it's smaller and less expensive than the Treos. I don't know anything about the M$ Mobile 5 OS except people complain it crashes alot. That doesn't tell me too much because my Palm based Samsung i500 phone crashes alot too.

What I'd like to know is what am I getting and what am I giving up with M$ Mobile over Palm 5? I'm not concerned about Mac compatiblilty. I'll just get the Missing Sync from Mark/Space.

Palm is debate-ably dying...I would go Mobile. WM5 was buggy when first released, but on specific devices. It has since been cleared up and is very stable.

Palm's current OS has been out for several years (2002)...and although stable, they've been planning releasing (and promised back then) OS 6 since 2003...and it never happened....yet.

I have a T-Mobile SDA, which is WM5. I can't say that I love it, but it has only crashed once or twice in the few months that I've owned it. There are some nice things about it (I can use the phone as a BT modem, I can transfer files back and forth via BT, there are a few neat apps out there, etc.).

Be advised that Mark/Space does not have a Missing Sync version for WM5 yet (although I did get an e-mail saying they have an Alpha version for those who own a previous version).

Look on NYTIMES, Pouge did reviews of both the 700P and 700W. There is a really funny video part of the review. Personally I much prefer the Palm OS. Lacking a few things but much more stable, less clicks to do what I need to do.

Palm is, of course, less evil than MS.

Just because it has two clutches, shifts faster, uses a torque converter or has near-infinite gear ratios, requires less driver intervention and is more efficient doesn't make it better in my opinion.

I bought the MDA (the European version, actually) and gave it a good try, though I decided to return to my Sidekick II. It wasn't bad. Windows Mobile 5 in PDA form is a little too stylus-dependent for my tastes. I'm curious to see how it will be on the Q.

I would also consider the XV6700 on Verizon if I were you, as well as the PPC-6700 on Sprint. Sprint is far cheaper for data and far more lenient about tethering than Verizon.

The problem with T-Mobile and Cingular is that they're moving way too slowly to get to 3G data.

Verizon and Sprint are running away with EVDO and it appears it will be late this year before Cingular launches much of their faster network.

I suspect the Palm OS is still more handheld-friendly, even if a little dated.

Verizon's EV-DO footprint is bigger than Sprints, and more importantly, in existence in places I travel to a lot.

Anyone know if the Moto Q can be used as a modem? I really think the Q might be the way to go if it can.

unless you really need al the 700p stuff and would make full use of it, I'd go with a pair of Moto e815s from CircuitCity. $50 w/BT headsets for a pair.
I was just tossing this around myself, but decided I'd ratrher have a separate device for PIM, my old Clie, and a EVDO phone to attach to it or the laptop.
e815 iSyncs very well.
