Speaking of geek compulsions...

I decided it was about time that I figure out how to print from my Ubuntu Laptop to the HP printer connected to my iMac. I've been generally scared of doing this because I've read nothing but horror stories about CUPS, but it was a piece of cake. On the Ubuntu computer I selected the "System" menu and then selected "Printers". Clicked on Add Printer icon. Selected Network Printer option. Defined it as a CUPS Printer. Here is the only part that was tricky. Using Firefox I entered the IP address for my Mac followed by :631 (http://192.168.1.2:631). This opens up the CUPS printing WebGUI on the Mac. I browsed until I found my printer and looked at the link used for the printer (http://192.168.1.2:631/hp_Laserjet_1320_series). I typed the link into the CUPS address on the Ubuntu machine and selected my make and model of printer. Done. Could it possibly have been that easy? It seems to be working.

I should point out that if your host Mac has printer sharing turned off, or if you have webhosting blocked this may not work. You will need to turn on printer sharing. You may need to sit down at the actual machine to get the web address of the printer (http://localhost:631) then browse for your printer.
