Mom got a iPod Video for Christmas... unfortunatly, she only has an iMac SE

My father asked me a couple weeks ago about getting a iPod Video for my mom. I didn't think she would use it not to mention, they only have an iMac SE at Home and a Wall-street Power Book at work. Basically NONE of their computers have USB2 and can't be upgraded. I do have a G5 at home and at work so I could arrange doing the initial sync of some of her music (she still loves her cd's) and all of her photos. However, if she has patients will the iMac be fine? My dad really wanted it for her to put all her digital photos on it of her grandchild.

I would love to push them to replace their iMac w/ a MacMini however, then they would need a monitor, keyboard and mouse seeing the iMac still works great.

Comments would be great!

Thanks!

would a palm pilot be a good compromise? i have photos of my kid on my palm which are good for showing others and i don't even have the best photo viewing palm.

though mom is overdue for a new computer, it doesn't really sound like she's into updated tech. if she's happier with her cd collection, it seems overkill to get an iPod just for pictures.maybe she'd find a pda useful.

just a thought.

I also got an ipod video and have a TiBook with usb 1. It charges and works fine, just slower data transfers. I transfered short videos , music and photos. So dont worry, use the imac, it will be fine.

graylocks,
which palm do you have? I was wondering about putting pics on a palm for my mom or mom in law, but I've never had a palm. I guess what I need to know is, what is the cheapest palm I could buy that would also be good for holding pictures?

which palm do you have?

i have a zire 31. when i bought it the Z31 was the least expensive one that had color; i don't know if that is still true. it cost about $130 i think. i needed the pda capabilities so everything else has been gravy. folks are impressed mightily when you run a little slide show of photos. i recently realized the palm can also play mp3 so i've asked for a big, wonkin sd card for xmas so i can listen to podcasts.

as i said, there are palms that are supposed to have better picture quality but this has been fine for my needs.

If your mom's SE has a firewire port you could get the firewire dock available from the Apple Store. Eliminates the need for a USB 2 port.

I don't think the video iPod is compatible with the dock to firewire adapter.

Hmmmm, I thought the Nano and Video iPods ONLY support charging via firewire... Am I correct? If not, she probably can just use my sisters iPod MINI firewire cable to charge?

Also, thanks for the "palm" suggestion... I will bring that up... However, it sounds as if she's excited to have her own iPod... So, maybe I'll rip down some of her favorite cd's to the iPod, load it up with photos... and maybe I'll create some iPod friendly Video clips for her iPod (have to read up on how to convert quicktime files to iPod friendly clips)... She'll get some good use out of that thing...

Thanks!

Nope, Video iPod ONLY charges with Firewire, does NOT transfer any data via Firewire (or is this something new?).

I just updated my Video iPod via USB 1 with that Inside Battlestar Galactica free download (21 minutes long) and about 45MB of songs and it took less than 5 minutes. It is slow but by no means unbearable.

I have a cheap USB 2 card in my 867 Quicksilver Tower but it acts flakey with the iPod so I do most of my transfers via USB 1 to avoid the headaches.

Seems that everybody thinks that USB 1 is incredibly slow with the video iPod (like Dial-up Internet vs. Broadband). I think of the updates like waiting for a flash animation to load, sure it is a minor inconvenience, but worth the MINOR wait.

Think back in the old days when you used to Burn CD's in old versions of Toast and you had to LITERALLY sit on your hands and not touch your computer for fear of a Coaster. We survived that.

Mac OS X is much better because U can Multitask. I plugged in my iPod, read a fews posts on the forum and it was done.

Your Mom will be okay with iPod and the iMac SE...

Enjoy!

hmm, my mistake. They use to have a universal dock that used firewire (maybe I saw it somewhere else?). The universal dock they sell now uses the cable you got with your iPod. That wouldn't help your situation. Sorry.

No apology necessary... I still find it annoying that Apple is trying to "force" (yet USB 1.1 still works) apple people w/ firewire and NO USB 2 to consider a new computer...

Apple has always done this. They are always switching standards to go with what seems to be the best path to the future. They don't look back (too much). Just think, if they retained firewire functionality you'd have a bigger and more expensive iPod. Not a good marketing move for them.

My son just got a 30 GB video iPod and he charges and transfers music and photos to it via the USB 1 port on a 6+ year old iMac G3 400 DV with no problems whatsoever. Your mom will be just fine using her iMac SE with her new video iPod. (She is using OS X and the latest version of iTunes, though, correct?)

And as for PDAs - I have a Palm Tungsten E that I loaded a bunch of photos on. My last Canon digital camera came with a 32 MB SD card (I bought a 512 MB card for the camera) that I stuck into my Tungsten E and loaded pics onto. The pictures look great on the E.

Golfer, it isn't the dock, there is no firewire communication interface in the nano and video iPod. The Ti chip is huge compared to the 'pods.

That dock wouldn't help, either.
