S/O called from her way home from work that an 90 mile per hour speeder catapulted a rock into her 96 RAV4 Toyota's windshield. And the crack has been spreading rather fast. She got the license of the speeder's car. I suggested her to call her car insurance immediately. Should she call the police as well? TiA

I wouldn't put it on your insurance, it will make your rates shoot up, and it will be less than your deductible. Get a quote from Safelite, they even come to your work, or home to replace it. Most likely less than $150.

Have her give all the info to her insurance company. Many auto policies have glass replacement as part of the comprehensive coverage. Mine covers free rock chip repairs, and has just $100 deductible for a new piece of glass.

And in case some @#$%& chime in and moan that her rates will go up, I had 3 different rock repairs done on 3 of my cars in a 16 month period, on top of a new windshield on my 4th car, and my rates never went up.

S/O has comprehensive coverage. She's been very good driver all of her driving years up until last year ... she backed into someone's car in a subterranean parking. Still, her insurance rate did not go up due to her good driving record. In any event, she'll be calling State Farm tomorrow's morning.

You don't have to be going 90mph to kick up a rock that could crack someone else's windsheild, so I doubt the other insurance company would even listen to your claim.

It would be nice though if she could get her own company to help pay for it.

Her insurance will probably cover all but a small deductible. Mine is $100.

As for who did it, and can they be held accountable, never gonna happen. Any way to prove that a specific car/truck threw the rock? Not unless you have a dashboard-mounted video camera.

In order to collect any money from the other driver they would have had to been hauling rocks and have one of those rocks fall from their vehicle and cause the damage to be held responsible. Having one's tire pick a rock up from the road and toss it in the air leading to damage to another vehicle does not make one responsible for the damage.

Before someone says "not so!", this is what my State Farm agent has told me on 2 separate occasions so I am quoting her. And I figure she knows more about such matters than I. I've had 3 windshields replaced due to flying rocks, one of which which was replaced at another's expense due to the fact the rock in question fell off of a quarry truck. The other 2 were replaced by State Farm. Windshields are covered under comprehensive and having one replaced does not effect your rates.

Similar thing happened to me. I called State Farm to report and learned I'm covered for full replacement, no deductible and no increase in rates. They also paid for the VIN to be etched on the replacement just like the original's theft prevention scheme.

I learned the hard way that windshideld cracks longer than 4-5" will be repaired by Safelite (my insurance company, USAA, does it for free), but they will cause your car to fail motor vehicle inspections in many states.

I had a rock strike my windshield a few days before I was to take it in for inspection.

I got State Farm, and they will replace it free, with no deductible and no raise in rates.

What I was told when I had my windshield cracked was that the item has to come from off the truck/car and not touch the ground first or have been on the ground. So yes, a big quarry truck spewing out rocks that fly through the air would be responsible. However, if those rocks hit the ground first and then are kicked up, it isn't their fault.

Same deal with a box that falls off a truck, once hit hits the ground, it is considered road debris, and it is your responsibility to make sure you don't hit it.

I had this done recently. someone's rock=et too, I'm sure. GEICO (and perhaps all ins in NYS) cover full glass, NQA.
every now and then the pols get something right.

Hi everyone,

I concur about the insurance companies. It's under comprehensive and I've had the windshield replaced in several cars. No deductible. No increases. Definitely worth having the insurance cover it.

That said, don't waste time trying to get the other driver in trouble, i.e. call police, inform the insurance company, etc. While he/she is responsible for causing the damage, it is also one of those things that isn't within his/her control. It's not like a poorly covered truck, where the damage would've been avoided if the back had been secured properly.

BTW, get the crack repaired in a timely manner. An officer can and will pull your singificant other over and ticket her for it. I know someone who went for weeks with a cracked windshield. He never got around to getting it repaired because he didn't think it was high priority. A cop pulled him over and ticketed him. He got the windshield repaired the next day.

My ins. is with Farm Bureau and I have optional comprehensive coverage for glass breakage and it's
very cheap. I just got mine replaced about a month ago, no deductible. They
came right to mu house and were gone in about an hour.
