What to do/see in Chattanooga?

It's time for The Great Trek North. Chattanooga -- we've driven through but never stopped and think maybe to stay a night, or two? We'd appreciate comments from previous Chattanooga "tourists" -- where to stay, what to see, what to do...

A ride to the top of lookout mountain on the tram is fun. Also, consider a drive along the ridge, I think it is Crest drive. Cool homes and tons of history from the civil war along that road. Magic Mushroom pizza downtown is great. Check and see if the Friday night free concert series is going on yet downtown. Chattanooga is a fun town and I almost took a job there.

The Chattanooga Choo Choo Holiday Inn. This place really was more than the pictures show. We stopped there two years ago on the way to Huntsville and spent the night. Riverboats tours with meals float up and down the river too. Real train rides of length nearby.

The one day I was in Chatanooga was a great time. Downtown was great. The aquarium was great. The river was awesome. I visited artists studios across the river.

On your way to Chattanooga, go by Chickamauga Battlefield (in GA, right at the border). If you are a minor caver, there is Raccoon Mountain just to the west of Chattanooga. RogerF is right about the Choo-Choo, and the various comments about the aquarium are correct, as well; I believe the acquarium has the largest fresh-water acquarium in the country. You can take the Incline Railway to the top of Lookout Mountain; you can travel down the ridge from Lookout to those crazy folks who go hang-gliding (you can take a dual training ride). If you have some extra time, go to the Ocoee River an hour to the east (where the Olympics white-water events were held) and go rafting; if you like mild water, you can tube the Hiawassee (again to the east). The minor league Lookouts have a new field that is cost-friendly and very close to the action. Finally, the Southern Belle is a pretty neat river cruise/meal.

We've had lots of fun in Chattanooga over the years. We live between Chattanooga and Atlanta and often choose Chattanooga for day trips.
