As long as it doesn't flip to the south I think we will be ok.

How far south is your cutoff?

If the North Pole appears under Tahiti, are you cool with that?

I don't quite understand why this has become such a interest in the media. Magnetic north is always changing.
The algorithm for this change for a decade or two is programmed into any GPS that has the capacity for calculating magnetic north from true north.

Are there actually people around who don't know that the poles are constantly drifting, or are you guys just trying to be funny? This was something I learned in middle school.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I don't know, but then I often don't know what many of these threads are about. I do think there is a modern recent concern about instability in the field, leading to concerns about a flip to the south, which I thought could be really, really bad for a few thousand years, but Doc's link suggest we may still be protected during the flip at least in part.

That was a question, not a boast. I'm a bit puzzled about this post since I'm not sure if it is just making a joke about polar wander or whether the OP really didn't know that the poles drift. I have been under the impression that pretty much everyone knew that the poles drifted but this post seems to suggest that I was wrong about that...I think.

To be honest davester I would guess many people do not have this info upfront on their personal hardrives.
Also some of us are old enough to forget what we used to know the we knew *(:>*

edit: also it is good to see you back I did miss your posts during the Holidaze and so did Mavic. I used the devil smiley to lighten my comments. Welcome back *(:>*

No, you're right- you are wrong.

I'm sure there are millions of people who don't know and don't care. It's just not important to a very large number of people.

What does "minutia" mean? Do I need to know for life to go on?

It could kinda suck to be a bird or other migrating animal who depends on the Earth's magnetic field for directions. Then again, the field switches every 300K years or so, and migrating birds are still here, so i guess it's not catastrophic. Perhaps they all just go to Tahiti. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
