Just curious: how do each of you sort your files/folders on your Desktop (if you place anything at all on them). I was iChatting with a colleague this morning, and we were talking about our preferred ways to sort the files and folders we store (temporarily or permanently) on our desktop.

Another fan of Default Folder. Been a constant user of that for centuries.
What are your menu icons, Zoid?

My odd 3rd-party menu icons (leaving out the Apple ones) are, left to right:
QuicKeys, Backblaze, Spell Catcher.

Also: how do you line up all those icons on the left. Is that done manually? Very nice design.

I don't keep anything on my desktop in the long term. Just have any mounted media icons on there, and also use it for a temporary location to hold a file that needs to be transferred somewhere else.

Yes, the icons are manually placed there; I usually only keep my HD on the right and keep other access items on the left. I do keep it set to "always snap to grid" to keep it neat.

That Total Finder looks very interesting; almost like a simpler more streamlined version of Path Finder.

Mine, like my real (physical) desktop, tends to accumulate piles of junk. At least now and then I clean up the computer desktop. Much of the stuff ends up in a folder called *Desktop—WFF!" That means "Weed, File, or Fling!"

It's fast becoming my next Default Folder, insofar as it being indispensable for my day-to-day use. Really like having a unified Finder window with tabs; keeps things neat. One of my favorite features is the "meld" feature (command + u) when you have a couple of windows open; makes it easy to move things while keeping each view how you want it (i.e., one is folder view, the other list, etc.).

I tried Pathfinder several times, but never got into it.

You're welcome; thanks for starting the thread. I like seeing how others set things up and what apps/utilities they use; I usually come away discovering a few great new tools.

BTW, the background is something I found over at deviantart.com; [uratsakidogi.deviantart.com] . He's got one with the "That's All Folks!" wording on it as well.

I don't keep my desktop for long periods of time. I work on a dual setup; an iMac (iMac9,1) with an Apple LED Cinema Display, which is what the screen shot is of (and serves as my main monitor). I usually keep the main monitor with a clean background (so as to better see icons and etc, also less distracting when I'm working). Some other backgrounds I routinely use (though a couple go against the "clean background" statement above):

I'm excited to try out this Total Finder. I've been looking for something like it for years. I also found Path Finder to be too much, and it became one of those great ideas that I could never easily incorporate into my work flow. I'm checking out TF now.

(by the way, if you have any great dual desktop pics to share, let me know. I've got a few that are amazing).

you guys need dropbox and grabox for screen shots

its a one click process

shift + command + 3 or 4 = it automatically places your screen shot in a folder in your public folder, then copies the link for you (shortens it too)

I don't keep my desktop arranged automatically. Instead, I position icons as needed to keep my daily workflows as organized as possible given the ramshackle nature of much that I do.

Haven't seen my desktop in a long time. I keep many programs and windows open and just navigate by using Command-Tab. I also rely in Menubar items a lot. I never was able to find a use for Spaces or anything Desktop related. I tried a few times to use Quicksilver, but never got the hang of it.

13" MB, FWIW

Dock is usually hidden, but I brought it out for the pic. I am very much an "out of sight, out of mind" person, so things that need immediate or somewhat immediate attention are loose on the desktop.

I am also big on lists, so there are generally 5 or 6 Stickies stacked up at any given time.

LOL! I thought about that, but the petsitter will be staying here and I live in a highrise with a 24 hour doorman, so I'm pretty safe.

Any tips for Italy are welcomed, BTW! We're doing Rome, Venice and Florence/Tuscany.

I can't stand having files plastered all over the desktop. It looks awful, like a dog run where nobody scoops, and it's a poor way to organize work (or porn or whatever else it is that people throw on there).

The 9 menu icon is for Classic. Once in a great while, I have to access old Pagemaker documents. But that's about it.

2 folders in Dock for Apps and Aliases, which take me to my data. Drag box folder on the DT for quick pic dump from the web. Just cleaned the DT up a week ago as there were all of 8 folders and items on there for no reason. I have a second screen with nothing on it, just a desktop of various HST and amateur pictures. Both are usually cluttered with windows.

Pretty much like that most of the time. Dock is normally hidden. I will occasionally have some files on the desktop if I have a current project in process. This is on my 15" MBP with 1680x1050.

I never bother with individual Office icons. If I'm regularly using it, I use the Project Gallery as my start-up
for the suite, and then select the blank for Word/Excel/PP, and save their crappy icons from polluting
the desktop and the dock.
