Any devices to beam OTA signal from one part of the house to another?
Posted by: Black

I asked this before maybe a year ago and got some thoughtful responses, but there didn't seem to be a solution at the time.

I have some difficulty in various parts of my house with TV and FM reception-- wondering if anything exists to beam an RF signal from the antenna to some sort of receiver where needed. The front of my attic would probably work wonderfully as a place to locate an antenna, but it's just not feasible to run coax to the places it's needed.

Lots. I recall the first kit/product like that in my memory was called the RABBIT then LeapFrog, then X10 something or other.

I've used the X10 Pyramids and they're OK for short runs. But if I read Black's post correctly, he is looking for a wireless link between the antenna and the receiver. I've never seen that done. No option to tack coax under the roof eaves or throw it across the roof or any of the other 'shortcuts' done on budget cable installs?

You got it.
I could draw, scan, upload and post a diagram of where the signal is needed in relation to the front of the attic, but I'm not sure anyone is interested enough to go to that effort, or that it would add much beyond "no easy way to run coax."

...

Those products handle processed video & audio signals only. Not the raw, OTA data from
an antenna.

I used Mini-Coax F-type Cable to send the antenna signal from the 2nd floor down to the first floor. $11 for 50ft @ Amazon. The stuff is easy to route & hide and maintains a strong signal over
the 50ft run. I'm using a Winegard FV-HD30 FreeVision HDTV Antenna inside my BR window.

Thanks for the link. Can't figure out any way to run this up into the attic without drilling very large holes in ceiling and floors.

The stuff on the link below can give you an idea how to route cables through the interior of walls and from one floor to the other.

The drill bit is flexible but you also need the "placement tool" in order to bend the bit, and the mesh "pull tool" to pull the cable through. I invested in such a setup---they ain't cheap--- to create a new outlet box in a wall. The outlet box has an RF connector and an RJ-45 connector; I ran both up from the basement to the living room. Pretty easy, but I don't claim to know that I'd be able to traverse 2 floors.

It might be necessary to create a hole in the wall you don't want in order to snake the cable through to another part of the wall, but relatively small (4x3 or whatever) cutouts in drywall can be patched/replaced.

Appreciate all the footwork. Definitely not able to take on a project like this right now. This thread is going the way the last one did-- I tried to be specific.

Ha! That teaches you to ask questions requiring specific answers.

What about an HDHomerun? You connect your antenna into the HDHomerun and the HDHomerun to your network. You need a device on the network that can access the data. Mac, WIndows, Linux PC, XBox 360, and maybe other devices. Check it out.

Thanks. I use an EyeTV for the place I want TV reception, and in the other place it's FM radio that I'm having trouble with.

Sorry, I thought you needed help with TV AND FM. I don't listen to the radio, so I wouldn't be of much help to you.

pay someone to do whatever cable runs you need from the attic.

install a real (4-bay or 8-bay) antenna in the attic, probably with an amp.

Thanks. Not quite enough of a priority for that . . .

This would be a "MacGyver" approach and would only work for an audio signal be it FM or TV.

Build one of these, and connect it to the audio line outs of an FM or TV receiver tuned to the channel you want. Then tune other FM receivers in the house to the frequency you set in the transmitter. I built one of these and the output quality is very good. The signal coverage is adequate for a house on the low power setting.

Rebroadcasting the entire FM and ATSC band would be very expensive, not to mention probably illegal. The room to room transmitters are limited to one channel at a time.
