Installing 10.3.9 on brand new (10.4 OEM) eMacs?
Posted by: Paul F.

Just got 8 brand spankin' new eMacs, 1.25ghz G4's...
Not even had the first one out of the box yet. (I wasn't expecting delivery until friday at the earliest!).

As much as I'd LIKE to start bringing things up to 10.4, we don't have a license for more than just these 8 ("single seat") eMacs, and I want to keep ONE OS on as many computers as I can for commonality of user training..

In the past I've tried installing an earlier OS on eMacs than they shipped with, without sucess.

Anyone know of any work-around to get them running with 10.3.9 so I don't have to "pirate" 10.4 to the whole Lab to keep things looking the same??
I wouldn't be asking if the new eMacs were significantly different than the ones we already have running 10.3.9, but they're not... in fact, I have 4 1.25ghz eMacs on the other side of the room running 10.3.9.

OK.. I'm going to stop typing and get one out of the box and try just cloning 10.3.9 to one...

Oh, sure... use logic...

I'm cloning anyway... (no space to drag another one to my "bench", or firewire cable long enough)...

I'll see how it works... or how it doesn't work, as the case may be...

Nope... Tiger installed, in all of it's 18 install CD glory.. (CD ROM only Edu model of eMac...).

If the "Clone" doesn't work, I'll probably try a retail 10.3 disk set install, and see if I can customize the install from there to match my "Standard Lab Model Mk3.1".

MacTracker indicates that 10.3.3 and higher should work on that machine.

Ha! Sucess!

Now why didn't it work back in September with another eMac?
Oh well.. I was probably in a hurry, and only gave it one shot.

Actually, I just checked...
It's not 18 CD's...

It's 20 CD's! Plus two XCode developers tools CD's and one Hardware Test CD (that oddly enough, also has the 9.2 Classic installer on it...).

TWENTY Cd's for the eMac Install set!

I remember when OS's came on ONE CD, and there was room LEFT OVER to add some utilities!

10.3 is 3 disks (plus X Code) and you almost never need the 3rd CD.

Effing bloatware, if you ask me.

Does 10.4 at least give you the option to not install all that endless crap? or pick and choose if you know what you are doing? I understand that the OEM disks with a machine will contain iLife and iWorks, so that is essentially about a quarter of it. (if not more) But still. 20 CDs is way more than a dual layered DVD.

That reminds me of my last M$ Office install using floppy discs . . . I think it was 18 of 'em . . .

Not clear where you came up with twenty CD's? I have Tiger 10.4 full retail on 6CD set, four are the Tiger OS and 2 are the Xcode Development tools not needed for average user. Must be special package related to the emac and associated software?

Yup...
It's the standard-in-the-box set of eMac restore disks...
Every-freakin' thing they could put on it...
Including an MS Office "Demo", iLife, and iWork Demo...

Hopefully, I'll never have to use 'em..
I plan to "clone" one of the new drives to an external drive.. or to a DVD if it'll fit (maybe without some of the demo software).

I thought at first they'd accidentally included TWO full CD sets.. but no, it was just in two different media envelopes.. the CD's are numbered 1 through 20...

Oh, yes - and there was that floppy swapping dance whenever you wanted to save to a different floppy, because the computer didn't have a hard drive or even a second floppy drive. It's been a while, hasn't it?
