Quad Core i7 for the 15" and 17".

Intel graphics only for the 13". AMD/ATI graphics for the 15" and 17".
No SSD for the boot drive, but available for build-to-order as a main drive.

I just glanced at the 13" MBP specs, as that is what I have since July of last year and what I might have been willing to upgrade, and while the processor upgrade is nice, it comes by sacrificing battery runtime. Now Apple is advertising 7 hours, as opposed to the previous model's 10 hour length. The screen resolution is also the same, at 1280x800, I would have considered replacing my not even a year old 13" MBP had the screen resolution been bumped up. I'm also disappointed that USB3 wasn't included. There is no reason why Apple couldn't do both new high-speed busses.

Oh, and if Thunderbolt is supposed to be the connection of the future, why not add 2 Thunderbolt ports? Currently, if I'm running a display, then I won't be able to use a storage device if there is only one port.

I5 and i7 processors, including quad cores

AMD graphics on high-end models

Thunderbolt I/o

No SSD/HD hybrid storage for the OS. Looks like that's for next time.

A friend of mine came over to the house last night wanting advice about buying a Mac. We decided on the MacBook Pro. But I told her to wait until today to buy it. I guess we'll be going with the new one.

If it were anyone BUT Apple I'd say it was an interesting choice. But it's par for the course for Apple.

So you can connect your Apple LED Cinema Display or other existing display, along with multiple high-speed devices, all from a single port.

I do wonder why they just couldn't use "LightPeak" -- except, perhaps, because it uses no fiber
in this implementation, LightPeak IS a bad name for it.

Still - it will hinder the idiots who don't realize that everything else called "LightPeak" is something
they can connect to it.

edit

I read the DaisyChain spec about 6 months ago, and that Apple has been working with, and pushing
Intel on this for over 2 years.

People cried about the iPod and iPad name, not to mention the MacBook name.

People is funny folks.

Steve Jobs must be really leaving

That statement makes absolutely no sense.

daisychain what? the devices that don't exist yet?

Dumbness.

then you need 2 ports for what? the devices that don't exist yet?

More dumbness. You think manufacturers are going to wait for Apple to make a 'Book with two T-Bolt ports before they start making peripherals? Yeah, right.

from what I have read, you can daisychain

Right. It's possible that newer displays could pass all the data through their displayPort cable and have a port or two built-into the display. Like the ADC display and the current LED Cinema Display.

Yeah, the current or older mDP displays won't pass LP/TBolt info. So what. The price of progress.

Open the whine. It's going to be a tough week for some of you.

Acclamation is hell.

Interesting choice by Apple.

Let's see, 10GB throughput vs. 5GB. (Both theoretical, at this point, but still..) Does LP/TB tax the CPU like USB? More, less, not at all?

Just for the speed alone, I can see Apple's choice. If LP/TB is less CPU intensive, then I'm in.

More expensive, probably. But then I don't see the "Mac Tax" as taxing at all.

you missed the point. They complain about only 1 Thunderbolt port. When the are told they can daisychain, they complain that there are no Thunderbold devices to daisychain. Then why the VTPKL do you need more Thunderbolt ports, if you don't have devices to hook up to? when devices show up, they can be daisychained.

Then why the VTPKL do you need more Thunderbolt ports, if you don't have devices to hook up to?

Then why do you need ONE Thunderbolt port if you don't have devices to hook up to? It looks like you're still missing the point.

when devices show up, they can be daisychained.

Maybe. You apparently assume all devices will have pass-through ports. That may very well be an Intel. If so, shame on me.

If not, then two ports might be a very good idea. I'm guessing that external HDDs and SSDs will probably have extra ports. There are other devices like optical drives that may not.

Now someone can argue that their unique use and work flow should be the universal standard and if one port is good enough for them, than it should be good enough for everybody. But that's typical dumbness.

Now *I* can probably do with just one T-bolt port, but that may not be the case for every other 'Book user.

I'm just sayin'...

Yeah, just checked: 14 days. I bought it on the 28th of January. It was a refurb; paid $999, so even if I could return it, wouldn't be a 'free' upgrade.

It's not my main computer, so it'll be fine; it's really quite a jewel of a machine. But an i5 and Thunderbolt would be nice. . .

I may have the answer to my own question regarding not having 2 Thunderbolt ports and no USB3. By looking at the case design, Apple just needed to add a new logic board, the case did not need to be retooled for this update. I'm guessing that the next update will be a major redesign, wasn't that mentioned in one of the blogs; Endgadget or Gizmodo?

I would speculate that the next major update of the line will redesign the case and toss out Firewire and USB2, increase the Thunderbolt ports (or actually add a real LightPeak port as hopefully Intel will have gotten it's fiber act together) and maybe add a USB3 port. The 13" would go from a 16x10 to a 16x9 display to accommodate the 1440x900 display that the 13" Air has.

Or the 13" MBP fades into the sunset as any design changes could make it overlap the 13" Air too much.

Happy about the jump to quad core and that they kept firewire. I suspect that there aren't enough thunderbolt peripherals or adapters (any?) around. Am I wrong but at the moment the only use for the Thunderbolt port is as a mini displayport?

If you use an external monitor then the single ThunderBolt port it used up. My monitor doesn't have a TB pass thru - in fact I would need to use the miniDP to DVI on my monitor.

So to use a USB3 drive and monitor I would need a monitor adapter with a TB pass thru and a miniDP (or DVI out). Then a TB to USB adapter.

Would be a lot nicer with 2 TB ports, or 1 TB port and 1 miniDP port.

For the moment, even if the Thunderbolt doesn't pan out as a input/output channel, I'm happy that Apple added it. Now if we could only add back the expresscard slot.
