Anyone else never had a bank account?
Posted by: Mini 9

The Citibank subject line below made me think that I've never really had a bank account while an independent adult. (Christmas account as kid through parents, iirc).

I can't even recall the last time I was in a bank.

It was easy when I wasn't saving any money..
I held out until I was 27 or 28.. then I decided that I was long overdue to be putting money away long-term, and got a savings account.

How do you pay for stuff? Like an electricity bill or mortgage/ rent?

Always had a savings account since I was little, my own checking account since 18.
Both parents accountants . . .
I have tenants with no bank accounts though. They keep currency exchanges in business.

My parents started me with a passbook savings when I was like, 5 or something. Have had traditional accounts ever since then. Do you keep your cash in the mattress??

This is one of those threads that was truly disturbing.

I've had a personal savings account since I was 7. I've certainly had years where my debts were greater than my assets, but even in those years, I had some savings for liquidity purposes.

First checking account when 11 to pay my paper route bill. Had one ever since. My wife keeps the checkbook.

Do you have an account with a credit union or some other financial institution? If not, how do you pay bills? How can you order anything online? Don't you have to have an account of some sort to even get a credit card?

I can barely remember a time when I didn't have one or more bank accounts.

I can't even recall the last time I was in a bank.

That is about the only part I can relate to. I use the ATM often but it's rare that I go inside and deal with a human.

I'm still trying to understand what this "situation" is, almost sounds like a homeless person, or someone who's incarcerated or institutionalized, not sure that's something I would hope for.

Yeah, I was thinking that this was one of those "trick questions" too.

I guess it's possible to not have a bank account. I certainly couldn't function without one (or three, currently).

Huh?

What are you guys talking about?

Are you saying you have no credit card, no debit card, no mortgage, nothing to do with banks?

How do you get paid?

How do you pay for anything?

I have not been in a Savings and Loan nor a Bank.
Been a Credit Union member. And with that, they are not nor have been in the same town, so I've always done everything from afar.
So, seeing the Citibank subject line, I have had no experience with banks. People always talk about fees for this and that, spam/junk mail, being a number and not a name, not person association. My credit union has always been very personable and service-oriented even though I never go into it, either.

Thanks, I understand better.

Here in MN, there's no functional difference between a bank and a credit union per se. Local banks can have the same customer service as a CU. We go to both a nice local branch of a big bank and CU.

Have only dealt with a 'big bank' in San Francisco. They are nice, but I'd not choose that option if it were me. They are a part of my late uncles estate and I'm executor so my opinion doesn't matter in this case.

Although I personally could not stand the inconvenience of running out for a Money Order, those work quite nicely for mailing payments, even for credit card balances due. I would not like to be carrying that much cash on a daily basis, especially at 71. Can't fight or flee like I used to.

I think I will just put an OUT OF ORDER
sticker on my head and call it a day.

passbook savings when tiny here, too.
Was supposed to be worth millions with the compound interest.
I think I bought a bike ( pedals).

i think you're overestimating the the difference between a bank and a credit union.

nobody posts when their bank does something nice / useful.

Yeah - I had to drop my local credit union because my local bank had much lower fees !!!.

Still have my savings in a different credit union.

To me there is not a difference between a bank, and S&L, and a credit union, except CUs tend to be nicer and more affordable (see above for an exception).

Yeah, that's pretty much the case in most if not all places. The question as interpreted by 99% of others apparently wasn't asking what we all were thinking. Our bad, I guess.

Agreed-- silly distinction. I have half my money in a credit union account and the times I've had to call they've been nasty and unprofessional (when you can get someone to answer), and neglected to mention fees for services offered.

OK.

Down here a Bank, Building Society, Credit Union etc. are all the same thing except in name and maybe some technicalities.

All have similar fees and services etc.
