Finally dumped my sh!tty Palm Pre & now have an Android HTC Evo 4G. What apps to get?
Posted by: trisho.

FINALLY...I'm free of that GodAwful Palm Pre that was utterly useless. Bad battery life, memory leaks, bad touch screen sensitivity, etc.

Anyway, new beginnings. What Android apps are worth downloading. Could you please recommend some good Facebook and Twitter applications? Also, if there's a WordPress app for posting updates from the phone, that would be awesome. I'm definitely going to install Tango, MyTracks, ING Direct and a Citibank app.

Any other advice I should consider, especially for setting, etc? Thanks for any help or suggestions in advance!

Lookout. That's number one.

TuneIn Radio, Evernote, Amazon Kindle, PdaNet (free physical tethering), NPR, Fandango, Pinball Deluxe, etc.

I still have a Palm Pre (along with my Evo), which I like better than you do. Mine behaves.

Oooh! Thanks for reminding me about Evernote, I just started using it on my laptop and am digging it so far. And, I heart NPR a ton and listen to it every day. What's Lookout? Thanks so much for the suggestions.

everyone knows what "sh!tty" means, why not just spell it properly?

save with "VTPKL" (verb that pikoos kid learned). we all know what it means, sometimes we spell it fu*ked, sometimes "f**ed" but at the end of the day, we all know what it means and how to spell it.

so why? why all this pretending we don't use bad words, we don't spell bad words, when in fact we all do.

I know the feeling - finally dumped the Treo last week.

In the short time I've owned an android, here are some of my favorites:

Wifi Analyzer

Go Launcher EX (I use it to group applications by category e.g. "Utils", "System", "Games", etc.)

ASTRO file manager - for backing up stuff to microSD

MySettings for quick access to, well, settings on your phone (e.g. disable wifi, gps, data to save battery life)

Animated Analog Clock Widget - the only one I've seen with a seconds hand

Weather Widget - Free - the only 2x2 weather widget I've seen that shows the forecast for the next three days

Some really cool apps to have:
Barcode Scanner and ShopSavvy

Google Goggles

Google Translate

No one mentioned it yet, but yes, there is a WordPress app for Android.

The title of this thread would make a good country song.

JoeM & SdGuy, thanks for all those apps. robfilms, I'm on Sprint, yes. I won't be able to use the phone in Brussels, but I'll just get a prepaid while I'm there.

timg, damn fine WordPress detective work there...thank you.

Not to rain on the parade or totally hijack the thread but are any of you Android folks giving second thought to the platform with what happened recently with the "bad apps"? Personally, I wouldn't know where to start to research 2nd tier developers to make sure they were on the up and up.

That's what the previously mentioned Lookout app is for (and it's free BTW).

Advanced Task Killer (Free) -- addictive OCD app to turn off ALL apps with one press
ColorNote (Free) -- note pad to jot stuff down
Compass (Free) -- even though I know I'll never use it
Google Earth (Free) -- Tres Cool

Where - finds movie theaters/show times, gas prices, food, drink, etc; Droid-Mania's widgets (Silent Toggle and Brightness); K9 Mail - easily sets up and handles multiple email addresses in separate inboxes; Ringdroid - cuts songs into ringtones; Zedge - more ringtones than you can go through in a lifetime. All of these are free.

You hopped out of the frying pan straight into the fire.

My advice is to jump from there into the cool, clear water of iOS.

hope the android NPR app is more stable than the one on my iPhone. very frustrating for this NPR addict as it lags and freezes often. OTOH, TuneIn Radio is awesome and it's what i use for streaming NPR stations.
