Rockport discontinued my favorite shoes (a black Nubuck called the Traveler), and I'm at a loss. Requirements: black, don't need polishing and don't scar easily (Nubucks are perfect, but apparently no one makes black ones any more), appropriate for business casual (knit shirt and khakis), cushioning and arch support for serious walking. I'm talking about lots of downtown walking, to and from work, so if your idea of a long walk is going from the car all the way to the back of the supermarket, you may not be adequately testing this attribute. Please, nothing that looks like you'd play basketball in it.

Any recommendations? What about Doc Martens?

I don't know if they fit the bill perfectly for business casual. Maybe the brown ones.

I love Merrell Chameleons, the Streach models.

I've had 3 pairs, just started on the 3rd. Easily THE most confortable shoe I have EVER worn or tried on. Insanely comfortable. I love them. The weight does take a bit of getting used to, but it's not that bad after a while.

I consider them the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn, and they last well, too.

Ecco by far. They're rather pricey, but I got them when I was on my feet 40 hours a week working at *gulp* Fry's.

Da Good Life

I've walked MANY miles in Clark's. Only problem was the left sole split after about two years of serious walking in Japan, up/down stairs, etc., but I still wear them every day...

I'll have to try some of the other recommendations.

Mephistos or Eccos depending on your feet. Expensive, but last a long time and are easily re-soleable.

BTW, the Clark's I have are NOT re-soleable (great word).

My former boss swore by his Eccos. We used to work about 30 tradeshows a year which means tons of standing on concrete floors.

He forgot to bring them along on one trip and we spent 2 hours driving around looking for a shoe store that carried them because he HAD to have them for the show.

I found a pair of Ecco shoes that felt great and looked good too. When I went back to buy another pair, the style was being discontinued so they were 1/2 price. I called all the local stores to find some in my size. I bought about 10 pairs in two colors. That was 10 years ago , I haven't been to a shoe store since then.

Ecco or Keen. rockport is crap..

also, take a look at how stable the heel cup is. If it's flimsy, the shoe will suck. Also, put insoles in 'em...

Blusubaru, you're my hero for working at Fry's. That must have been a terrifying experience. Can you sleep nights?

Not sure if they'll have what you want but I love Skechers. They look good and fit my feet so well. I have crazy high insteps, very Japanese.

In fact, I'm wearing a pair right now and a woman in the office just complimented me on how good they look. How's that for an endorsement!
