OT: I got the call today that I didn't wanna hear, but I knew that it would come

Sorry to go Don Henly on everyone but I got the call...

.....the 10 year high school reunion call. Is that a gray hair on my head? winking smiley

Looks like I am going to have to dig out the slides that we had at the year end slide show. I have no idea where they are but that is the fate of the "photo dude" role I had in newspaper and yearbook.

Mine came and went last year with not a single call. I think that the person that was supposed to organize it became a crack addict.

Was your desk in the AV room or the band room?

My 20th came and went...3 years ago.

I did go to my 10th year reunion. Everybody trying to impress everyone. Didn't matter to me. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. A chance to see some very close friends.

I missed my 20th because I had to finish up a freelance project.

my class ('83) are a bunch of overspendy try-to-impress types. i've skipped all of them. the price is too high ($50/person, cash bar) to spend with people i really don't care to see that badly. yes, it would be nice to bump into someone on occasion (i don't), but high school was high school.

i keep in touch with a very small number of people from my H.S.

I went to my 10th...

Turned out that all the people from high school I have any interest in catching up with are my regular circle of friends...
The rest of the people that went to the class of '88 reunion were all the people I don't give a crap about wheter they drop off the face of the earth or not.

I'm skipping the 20th in a couple years...
Probably have a barbeque with the 5-6 friends I've had since high school and call it good.

I suffer from the same sensitivity that you do. A few nuggets of wisdom were shared with me and I'm "trying" to incorporate them into my life. First, remember that nobody can hurt your feelings unless you let them. You can always reject what is being forced on you emotionally.
Second, nothing changes unless you change it. If you don't want the behavior to be repeated then you need to take action. Otherwise the kid has learned that his behavior is the way to get things done, because everyone lets him get away with it.
In the meantime I sympathize because I've been there.

holy batpoop pRONbin... congrats on your impressive youth. I have clothes older than you, and just donated three pairs of shoes about your vintage [2 definitely older, the third mighta been close] to the local dumpster divers [gone in under 6 hours]. don't know how formal of an affair, or what theme you're having, but I have some 70's vintage Aloha shirts in my 200+ Aloha shirt collection [all size large], and would be happy to donate one [shipping included] for you to wear to your reunion under the following conditions; a] you must really wear it to the reunion, b] you must post a picture here of you wearing the shirt at the reunion, c] you won't ebay the shirt until after you post the picture smoking smiley

PM me if you're up for it..., I'll even email you pics of a few to choose from.

I went to my 10th but won't go to the 20th when it rolls around in 5 yrs. What I found is that nothing had changed. I was still in touch with most of my friends from high school & those that I'd lost track of never came to the reunion. The other people were just the same as always. Everyone stuck to their own little cliques.

The one exception to that, as I recall, was Alberta Lee. She's the daughter of Wen Ho Lee & this was not too long after the whole "Wen Ho Lee's a Spy" scandal. I'd say that seeing her was probably the highlight of the reunion. It was nice to get a more inside perspective of what had happened to her father. Quite a sad situation, really.

I've got my 30th in a couple years.

It's funny because some of the people I most like seeing now are those I never hung with in school - like the hardcore redneck (I'm talking HUGE belt buckle, felt hat and Acme boots in 1978) who now is a gay hippie.

Plus it's kinda fun to see the class powerbrokers all one step away from being counter help at MacDonalds.

Danny, the 10th isn't that big of deal. You'll find little has changed since most are just getting out of school or are still entry level employees. The changes start happening at the 20th. That's when kids enter the picture, careers are established and marriages are all over the place. At 30 is when the trophy wifes start appearing and sports cars reign.

I'm just hoping the 30th will be a barbeque or beach party instead of the dreary dinner party at the Hilton.....

Passed on my 5th, my 10th and just last year my 20th. I am sooooo glad I didn't go. After leaving highschool I lost touch with everybody, except those who went to the same junior college that I did. After college I lost touch with everybody. Now after so many years, I find myself working with the same guys I went to JC with. They went to the reunion and tried to convince me to go too. Declined. I left that part of my life behind me a long time ago, why go back?

I got to see some pictures from the last one and I gots to say, those people look old. Really old and really dumpy. Now I'm not vain by any means, but I look way better for my age then my classmates do. The balding and gray hair, that can't be helped much, and a few extra pounds is pretty natural, but some of these people really let themselves go.

Anyway, seeing my classmates getting older really put things in perspective. Made me realize how old I've actually become even though I don't feel that old. At 38, my life is pretty much half over, but I plan to make the last half the best.

I too got the 10 year class reunion email earlier this year. It's next June and they've started planning it already with that major class web site: [www.classreport.com].

Just from looking at the people who have entered their current bios and locations, just about everyone has kids right now and have moved about 15 feet away from their parents' houses. There's something in Orlando's water that makes you lose your drive and remain in a rut. We had a really big class too, about 550 graduated from the 700 started freshman year.

I'm still debating whether to go because I really don't care about most of those people anyway but two of my best friends still live there. If the price is right, I may just go and hang out with the kids I do know and ignore the rest.

I think I may have you all beat. My 50th will happen in two more years. Damn, that's half a century. Now I feel very old. I don't recall having gone to the 10th or 20th as we lived a long way at those times from Kilgore,TX, where I was raised (Just 27 miles east of samintx, by the way). I did attend the 30th and though living in the Netherlands at the time made it to the 40th.

A year ago there was another kind of reunion, the attendees getting together to honor one of the band directors, Mr. Jack England, who is now in his very late 80s. He was my band director in the mid 50s and I hadn't seen him since then. I didn't know many of the attendees but enjoyed seeing Mr. England and the few old faculty members who are still around and were able to attend. There aren't many of them left.

I enjoy going back for those get togethers.

earache - one of the things I enjoy about the high school reunions is that now, in my mid-60s, I look better and am in better shape than most of those who in high school were football players and had all the girls. I was a skinny kid who made good grades and wasn't dating material for the choicer girls. I have now filled out (a little to much actually) and the ex-football players' muscular physiques have gone to fat. At my 40th reunion, one of the very attractive and popular "girls" came up to me and my wife, looked me over, and said "gosh, you look good".

I forgot to mention in the earlier post that I don't attend my college reunions as I did not enjoy the one or two that I did attend. Even though it was a very small school with only 1000 or so undergraduates at the time, there weren't the same kind of memories and bonds as there were with high school.

I graduated in the 60's from a small town in Northern Idaho. I had a blast in high school. We only had a class of 96 and most of them were like family.
The 10-th had a little scorekeeping and a couple of the A-holes in the class laid it on thick. Nobody believed yet that anyone had or could change. Some unrequitted love taking happened also.
The 20-th was relaxed with no score keeping and a "just glad we made it" atmosphere; one of the big former A-holes had had a really bad run of health, marriages etc. and we genuinely felt for him. One of the other A-holes had had a GREAT run of luck and kept saying that, "We must go hunting in Africa sometime".
The 30-th had a LOT of discussions about health, children to brag about and recounting who'd fallen; it was the most loving and non-judgemental of all of them.
Now my 40-th is a breath away and I will attend if I'm able.
To the above posters who've projected that they will have a bad time at theirs, you will get what you project-and that's not necessarily an honest assessment. Also If you've retro-actively decided that you had a bad time in high school or feel like a failure, you probably won't attend. Go with an open mind and forget all of the slights, hurts or unsettled grudges; your targets probably have.

Class reunions are somewhat of a script of all of our lives.

Mine is coming up on the 16th. Went to the 5-year, but will probably not make it to this one (don't really care that much) 'cause I'll be helping work on a farm the 12th - 19th or so for the girlfriend's family seasonal harvest.

the key to reunions is realizing that you are still around to get the call. After the 30th reunion, it begins to be "Who's still alive" ? Once you get to your 60th reunion, they begin to fit in a small bar.

cbelt3, you bring up a very good point about those 60+ reunions and it reminds me of a picture of my Dad at his 70-th reunion. I attended also since it's a small town and a lot of people that are not members of a particular class attend other reunions-just to say Hi. He was literally the last man left standing. I can still see him clucking over the 5 women left as he escorted them all around the hall saying hi to much younger people attending. He was in 7-th heaven and just glowed. Alas, he only lived to 92 but was still farming when the end came.

My class size was in the 30s...so not many to begin with. A school close by, same graduating year as me, only had 11 in their senior class. : )
