My 13yo choc. lab/kelpie, Dawson, was just diagnosed with a heart condition and is now on meds (Lasix and Enalapril). Amazing what drugs can do. He's a completely different dog than he was even a year ago. Happy and full of energy. So now that he's on meds for the rest of his life, and not cheap ones at that, I need to find a more economic source for them than my vet. Does anybody have any recommendations for an online source? Petmeds.com looks pretty good and is a lot cheaper, but I see that there are several others. Thanks for your help.

May not be the best prices (I don't know) but I've bought from this place for my pets (amemia, kidney issues) and they are a fraction of the price my local vet charges.

That link I provided is who I use for things that require a prescription. My local vet doesn't care for some of the other online pet med places. He flat out refuses to write a prescription for some of them as they have caused him grief in the past. At least that is what I'm told. Supposedly, some of the places have provided his clients with expired medication and they come back on him for it even though it isn't his fault. I don't know if this is true or not but it's a good idea to check the expiration date on any meds bought from anywhere.

Remember that many medications pets use are also ones that humans use, and can be obtained at your local pharmacy. Furosemide (generic Lasix) is available as a $4 generic at many chain stores, as is enalapril. Depending on the specific medications you need, that may be an affordable option.

What TL said: just get them at a local pharmacy. I was spending $11 for a 30-day supply of furosemide or enalapril at my local CVS; different chains have different deals for generics, so it's worth calling around to ask about prices and discount programs. Ophthalmic ciproflaxacin cost me $50 at CVS. I decided to see if I could get it for less at Rite-Aid, and through their Rx savings plan, I was able to get it for $8.99, as it was on their list of "preferred" generics.

Also Petmeds will match any online price. You just send them the link and they credit your account.

We've been ordering flea and tick treatment from them for about 4 years and we have nothing but praise for them.

My local vet couldn't get one of the treatments I needed and I couldn't wait for an order to be processed and delivered on line. My vet set me up with a local pharmacy/compounder. Although it was a hair cheaper than what my vet would normally charge, the local pharmacy was still a good 30-40% more on what I needed. Wasn't just an off the shelf type thing so maybe that makes a difference.

Again - if the meds you need have human generic analogs, you can get them for very reasonable prices from a lot of pharmacies. When I needed long term antibiotics for one of my older dogs, I got the same amount from Wal-Mart for $10 that I had paid over $50 from the vet!

Thanks for all your help guys. I hadn't thought about going to a pharmacy, but that sounds like it might be the best option.
