removing glass from iMac (and maybe MacBook Pro)

I just learned that you can remove the glass form an iMac with some suction cups, or just some tape.

Can you put it back that easily? do you need to glue it or something? or it is just held in place with some clamps?

Is it that easily to remove on MacBook Pro as well?

and finally, if you remove the glass, can you still use the iMac? is the real screen behind the glass matte? would this be an easy option to get a Matte screen on a MacBook Pro 13"?

MacBook Pro is held in with adhesive tape. Easy enough with a suction cup and heat gun (though disconcerting). Biggest problem with putting it back is making sure no dust gets trapped in the process.

And if the glass is already cracked (or you crack it in the process), then it becomes a huge PITA.

Behind the black band on around the exterior is magnetic metal - then there are several strong magnets imbedded in the frame. Very nifty...

edited to clarify:

it's shiny, not matte - but not as glossy as the glass.

I don't understand threads like this.
There are a zillion excellent video tutorials available, specific to your machines.
Many have been linked in the last week . . . it's like you're accessing the internet with a device that can only pull in this forum . . .

chill out man

I watched some YouTube videos, but I could not tell if the screen behind the glass is matte or glossy. I know many people here upgraded their iMacs and I was looking for direct feedback.

What I don't understand is why you get so pissed off when we talk about Macs on a Mac forum.

I didn't object when you asked about attic antennas, UV light bulbs for your plans and so on.

if you don't understand the thread, move on to the next topic.

None of these questions were answered by the videos you watched?

not really, I watched a few YouTube videos during lunch and they showd tape, suction cups or even PLUNGERS to remove iMac glass, but I didn't see how they put it back.

I don't know what the current crop of videos looks like, but the ones I watched a year or so ago did not prepare me for how dirt simple the process was. The suction cups don't have to be industrial strength. You are simply using them to pull the screen to break the magnetic bond.

Someone bounce a rent check? I know you're gonna think later on that there was no need to bust his chops about this. What's the real difference if he comes here to look for a direct answer or if he finds one elsewhere by searching through some hit or miss options? Maybe he trusts the people here and their help/opinions.

You might want to take your own advice the next time you think about being a jerk in your responses.

And just for clarification, you didn't really think he was criticizing you for asking a Mac question, did you?

Seriously?
