My experience: ginkgo never worked, and has never proven to.

Rhodiola (rhodiola rosea) root, just by itself, can be an effective anti-depressant. Get the best source you can from your local health-food store, at least 5% rosavins. The tincture form, although pretty nasty tasting, is the most potent.

Eleuthero (eleuthero coccus) root, a classic adaptogen, helps with adrenal fatigue. But studies show it helps with concentration. I've found this one particularly helpful, especially cumulatively. 200-1000mg/day

A-Glyceryl Phosphoryl Choline: One of the precursors to acetylcholine, one of the main neurotransmitters in our brain. Used to be considered a B vitamin, now just thought of as a brain nutrient. Actually, get ahold of any of the available plant-based cholines now out there (phosphatidyl choline, etc). And the prices have dropped in the past 5 years (used to be north of $400/kilo and are now around $225). 500mg a day gives you a noticeable mental focus boost. AGP used to be available only in prescription form in Europe until 1999, it's that powerful.

Piracetam (or the more expensive form, Pramiracetam): one of the best nootropics out there, and again, the price has dropped significantly since the 90s. it's now around $50/kilo, and well worth it. You'll feel piracetam's effects fairly quickly. I found it actually helped with things like my eyesight, hearing, which isn't abnormal.

Others, but that's a good start.

I'm surprised more people don't. Most people's livelihoods rely heavily on the ability to think clearly, to process in multiple directions, etc., yet few look beyond daily tweaking their brain with stimulants. Caffeine can be great, but it doesn't give anything back. And like anything that tweaks, it has to use up existing nutrients to work (including adrenaline, which really rips up the immune system). Nootropics are really just brain vitamins, nutrients that it needs.
Anthony's right: with really good eating habits, nootropics become less important, because most are built into great food already. But for the rest, for those with any kind of vision for their life (kids too), it's worthy to experiment with them.
