Apartment options for vacation in Paris? Which section would you stay?
Posted by: trisho.

Hi there folks! A friend and I will be visiting Paris the second week of September and I'm trying to get some recommendations as to in which neighbourhood we should stay. Neither of us has been to Paris before and don't mind walking around or exploring. Here are some of our character profiles:

+ I would have just turned 31, she'll be 40
+ both designers so would like some place artsy not touristy
+ don't mind it being a little further out from the center but not too far
+ would rather rent an apartment than a hotel room
+ staying for 5/6 days
+ we can probably do about $150 - $200/night split between the two of us
+ plan on walking around food markets, shops, and lounging in the parks eating and drinking wine a lot
+ we're both food people and would love to be near an area close to inexpensive (street), middle and expensive options
+ plan to cook in the apartment, especially for breakfast and a couple of times for dinner
+ don't mind if there are some brown folks or queer folks around

We're currently looking on [airbnb.com] with a few saved. I was going to expand my search to [vrbo.com] as well after this hellish week of MFA thesis is done.

I know there's at least one person on here who lives in Paris, but I'm blanking on the user name. Is it Lew Zeland? After Paris, we're going on to Lisbon, Portugal and will stay my friend's apartment so that's all good. I can't wait for this trip, I need a break from stress and the US for a bit.

Thank you so much for any help you can offer!

My first choice (from what I remember a long time ago) would be in the Pigalle district or 9th arrondissement. No, not for the sex trade there but I had a friend who lived there in a very nice walk-up and we could go out for fresh bread in the mornings.

So, between 9th and 18th arrondissements.

Funny you should mention that, I was considering that area as well. Also, I think the 16th arrondissement as well. BTW, while you're here, do you have any favourite sections of Paris you'd like to share?

Don't know the current costs, but look into Montparnasse.

I've always stayed in the Latin Quarter when I go to Paris.

I think it's Lux Interior that's currently residing in or near Paris...

He might be able to steer you right.

N-OS X-tasy, thanks for the rreminder. I've been considering the Latin Quarter s well but have heard it's becoming touristy. I'll check it out again.

August, I think Montparnasse may be a bit pricey but I'll check it out. Thanks so much for reminding me about David's blog.

Paul F., yes, Lux Interior! I'm getting the old and needed a brain jogging. Heh, RAMDad, sorry, I think 2 people is already enough for this trip. I've done a Europe trip with 3 other people and that gets a little dicey.

My first Paris trip was with six other people (all women). Some interesting times on that one.

Ironman, I don't think there's any place in Paris where you can't duck out for fresh bread before breakfast.

I've always enjoyed staying in the 5th, around Rue Mouffetard, well known as a "food street." I'm not sure if that qualifies as Latin Quarter or not.

Maybe in the northern or central part of the15th arrondissement? Going south there is supposedly a cheaper middle class area but still close to everything and at most a 10 minute train ride to the center of Paris.

I stayed in the 1st arrondissement when I was there a few years ago, right by the Louve and the Jardin des Tuileries. A bit upscale but relatively quiet before and after business hours and close to everything which I wanted.

My sister goes to Paris every year. Here's how she weighed in:

I would suggest she try Paristtay.com for reasonably priced apartments, although most of the sites seem ethical. I wouldn't use one that wants you to wire the money. The deposits seem high, but ours was put on a credit card and never run through.

Several areas come to mind - Belleville in the 20th is the first neighborhood we stayed in. It was pretty much the Arab quarter but I've read that lots of artists are moving in. There was food everywhere, and each small neighborhood has a full complement of shops (one of the many charms of Paris).

The Marais is lovely and full of small shops and cozy restaurants, but it might be more expensive since it's so popular. It isn't as touristy as one might expect and we'll probably stay there the next time XXXX and I go.

Of course, there is always the Latin Quarter. The area around Shakespeare and Co is crammed with students and, once again, lots of cool little shops.

The great thing about Paris is that there are parks and stores and restaurants just about everywhere. These are my three favorite neighborhoods, but I am sure others can recommend more.

Wow, thank you so much all for the great answers. $tevie, a huge thanks for asking your sister to weigh in. I'm going to pass this link on to my traveling companion and we're going to go crazy happy researching fun neighbourhoods. I'll report back next week. Thank you so much again!

I would like to recommend the rue Cler neighborhood, in the 7th. My hubbie travels to Paris for work and we've stayed there 4 times, always love it. You can walk to many of the places you're most likely to want to visit, plus it's a real Parisian residential neighborhood with fantastic shops, cafes, etc.

This rental agency has a good reputation and listings in your price range.

Bon voyage!
