How many paid vacation days do you get?

question for those that work for an employer (not contractors, not self-employed)

how many paid vacation days do you get? do you get sick days? how many paid holidays?

my company decided a while back to combine vacation days (10, 15 or 20 depending on seniority) with sick days (6) and now we get

16 for the first 3 years
21 for years 4-10
26 year 10+

On top of that, we also get 11 paid holidays, 2 or 3 of which to cover the shutdown between Christmas and New Year. We also have to save one or two paid vacation days for this shutdown.

I am curious what other companies give their employees.

we get 0 for the first year.
1 week for the 2nd through 5th (maybe)
2 weeks after that
3 weeks after 10 years. Although the boss makes a point to mention that if you've been here that long, they don't really keep track of your time.

I think we get a week of sick days.

and whatever is normal for holidays.

in other words. about par for the course for a US company.

this thread is just going to piss me off.

15 after 7 years
20 after 20 years
25 after 25 years
30 after 30 years

no sick days. Ever. Vacation goes as 'sick days'.

It's nice to know that some countries are required to give their employees 30 days of PTO while you have to work for 30 years to get it. Doesn't the US rank either at the bottom or close to it for vacation time?

Annually-
22 days vacation
15 days sick leave
3 days personal leave (expires every year)

After 20 years you get more time off.

I've been with my current employer for 11 years. I have 24 vacation days, 14 or 15 paid holidays and get 15 sick days.

I'm self-employed so I get zero paid vacation, though I take about 4-6 weeks off a year.

US vacation policies are ridiculous IMHO. The rest of the civilized world generally starts at around 3 weeks vac minimum plus generous sick leave benefits. I think US vacations are so short because employers have to pay healthcare overhead unlike other countries, so it is much more costly for the employers to give vacation benefits.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

We just changed to the PTO system in January and there has been some time lost for new starts but I am grandfathered in to our old plan here. I wind up with 40 now. They would have broken down to:

4 weeks vacation (will change to 5 weeks in January when I will hit 10 yrs)
2 personal days
1 company founders day
officially 6 sick days but I generally don't take many, so they are given back
11 holidays

My last employer gave two weeks the first calendar year (or one week if hired after July 1); then it was:

Two weeks - year 1& 2
Three Weeks - year 3 to 9
Four Weeks - year 10 to 24
Five Weeks (or 4 + 1 week pay) for year 25+
we also got unlimited sick and 5 days personal paid leave (I never did figure out the difference between PLT and vacation)

Now I get Labor Day, Vets Day, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, two weeks at Christmas/New Years, MLK Day, Good Friday and one week in March. I am also off June/July but that is not paid. Welcome to teaching.

I get the following:

25 days paid vacation (maximum accumulation 64 days, extra turns into sick)
12 sick days (unused ones accumulate, paid out at 20% at retirement)
6 personal days (do not accumulate and disappear at year's end)

The sick time and personal time used to be 15 and 3 days respectively, that changed 12-15 years ago.

The amount of vacation time accumulation starts at 2 weeks per year for 0-5 years service, 3 between 5 and 10 years, 4 from 10 to 20 years. 25 days (5 weeks) is the max, for those who have worked for 20 years or more. All these accumulate at a per month rate, not awarded all at once.

The ability to accumulate sick time did come in handy last year. I used up around a dozen weeks worth during surgery and other treatments for colon cancer.

JoeH, I didn't know about your colon cancer last year. Glad to hear you're OK. Best wished to you moving forward.

i'm at 22 combined personal and vacation days now, i believe i get an extra day vacation next year and every year thereafter until i hit a combined 35 days off. The personal portion can roll over up to some ceiling or be paid out in 40hour increments at end of year, the vacation portion is use or lose. Currently in my fourth calendar year with this company.

15 vacation
10 sick
6 paid holidays (although you don't get the holiday off unless it falls on your normal day off)

You're allowed to carry 30 vacations days total, although they don't follow it too closely, good thing as I'm currently over. Also are allowed to carry 30 sick days, but I think that is due to some law limit. If you are anywhere close to the 30 sick days and something does happen to you, they will carry you for 60 days until disability kick in.

30-32 days. One can stretch that out by 'comp-ing' against overtime or extra hours that are not, being exempt, monetarily paid.

Due to the current economy, my employer no longer offers paid vacation days or sick days. And we are required to take 10 days of mandatory vacation this year with no pay. They also took away 3 days of paid holidays - New Years, President's Day and Labor Day. So those days we have off but also with no pay.

They said it would hopefully be temporary for this year but who knows.

That sounds about as likely as gas dropping down to where it used to be.

No vacation days (does not matter how many years of fulltime work.) Five annual holidays with pay (ie: christmas, thanksgiving, etc.)

I get:

20 days vacation
7 sick days which carry over and accrue
2 personal days
11 holidays

I use personal days first, as I can carry over up to 5 days which must be used in the first three months of the year.

Our sick day policy is actually very good. A few colleagues have used this when they had to have medical procedures done. One had bankrolled 30 days of sick leave and didn't have to take vacation or a leave of absence.

i'm completely confused by the idea of granting a number of sick days. what if you're sick more than that? less? should you use up your sick days on hangovers?

...compare to you guys.

And it's still not enough.

I work with a guy who said he never missed a day of work in his previous job. A ventured "You like the job that much"? He said "No, I just didn't get sick leave."

I'm confused by people who think sick leave theirs to use for whatever then want, particularly for those times they aren't actually sick.

I'm self-employed. Last year I think I got two (consecutive) days off, but wound up missing out on a gig in order to take the two days to visit my family. That was it for the year.

When I worked in my previous office job, I had gotten up to the maximum three weeks off per year, plus 6 paid sick days and I think six paid holidays of 1 or 2 days, depending on whether Xmess and New Year's fell during the week. The company was somewhat stingy with vacation: you had to be there 20 years to get 3 weeks off.

10 days sick leave
15 days vacation
8 paid holidays
2 "personal" holidays (as far as i can tell just more vacation but you don't have to wait for it to accrue)

Can't remember when it goes up or to how much, this is for year 1.

I'm retired. My wife is not. She last worked in December and will return to work in August. College professor on sabbatical. Normally she gets five months off and goes to work every-other-day during the other seven months. Six months sick leave per year if needed. All paid.
