Supermarket Standoff: Peanut Butter

We have embarked on a taste test tour of supermarket foods. We nibble, we score, and we share the results to help you avoid the paralysis of Brand Choice Overload.

Today's topic: Peanut Butter.
It's peanut butter jelly time!

Actually, it's just peanut butter time. Which still makes it a good time. We tested a mix of classic, organic, specialty, and choosy-Mom favorite peanut butters, all of which were creamy, not chunky. The tasting method: on spoons, on toast, and on celery sticks, for old time's sake. The snapshots of our editors smacking their lips: hilariously blackmail-worthy. We'll save those for a rainy day.

My preference is Trader Joe's Crunchy Salted or Unsalted Peanut Butter from unblanched peanuts. A similar product is available at most grocery stores. There is a layer of peanut oil then a layer of peanut bits (if chunky) and the ground peanuts or butter. I use a kitchen knife to stir and blend the layers together and when mixed I put the container in the fridge and the mixture is arrested in time and will not separate. If I need a softer spread I leave it out of the fridge for a while or just microwave it for a few seconds till it is spreadable.

I scoop off some of the oil off before I mix it as it's still too loose even after refrigeration. I agree with the Trader Joe's products.

They only tested creamy? Are they nuts?

My son recently discovered the joy of a PB and honey sandwich.

Interestingly, the Santa Cruz they deemed best overall was the one we started buying years ago...made the switch from conventional PB. Main reason was taste and it was organic. Brought it into work one day and my co-workers were floored at how good it tasted. They raved about the flavor, saying it reminded them of their childhood. Only pain is you have to mix it, but once in the fridge, it stayed that way.

I can't believe they put skippy as no.2, and that in spite of their comments on the chemical taste. Sounds like they only put it there because it reminded them of childhood. Yuck! After having tasted natural peanut butter I can't believe anybody could actually like the highly adulterated megacorporate brands.

You refrigerate peanut butter?

As far as taste, I think Aldi's PB is as good as anyone's, if we don't buy it it usually Peter Pan. If Aldi's wasn't
good I wouldn't eat. I send way more than I should on bread, I love Arnold's Whole Grain Sandwich Thins.

I don't think my sons, now in their 20's, have ever eaten a PBJ sandwich.
