Monster needs a Quantum HD logic board
Posted by: Monster

Got a dead hard drive from an iMac DV, 13 gig Seagate drive.
After having taken it out I can see the chip that is fried, nice little scorch mark, and soot on my finger after rubbing it.

Does anyone out there have one of these drives that they've pulled?
This is a friends iMac, and his wife's Doctoral Thesis is what needs to be recovered, they know about backups now.
To help with identification, pictures of the drives board, identifying stickers, and fried chip are below.

Ouch!

I've seen exactly the same thing happen on a couple Quantum drives... "My computer won't start up... and something smells funny...".

Just checked my stock of "spare" drives... no dice on the Seagate.

Hope you find one!

Uhm.... Quantum isn't Seagate. You may wish to adjust your title accordingly.

(Although, over time, Quantum is now a part of Seagate).

Quantum was bought by Maxtor, Maxtor was just bought by Seagate.

(Oh, and I don't have that drive)

right, it wasn't then, but is now, suggestion noted.

had a dead-ish iMac DV w/ 13GB drive I gave to KenSp. a while back, and he sent the drive back... I subsequently gave a bunch of iMacs to Harbourmaster, and I know we swapped some drives around, as at least one of the iMacs had a dead drive as its problem, and we may have put the one Ken Sp. returned [for data retrieval] into one that went w/ Harbourmaster, or not. Mrs. Buzz has been on the warpath lately, hiding everything of mine from me; under the guise of spring cleanup... if I can find one of the old 10 or 13 giggers from the iMacs, I'll get back to you... also, Baby Buzz has a pile of oldies marked for disassembly, and I will check there first, because I don't think Mrs. Buzz has discovered that pile yet, and it's a likely place to find one...

I have a 13 Gig HD from an iMac DV 400MHz. It's marked as a Maxtor, I believe, but will it work? I can check it when I get home from work tonight.

I would think that it wouldn't, since the boards should be different, if the board is a match with the same chips it may work, but since I've never swapped boards before I can't say for certain.
Anyone else care to comment....

Monster, OK, found 13GB former iMac drive, and it's a Quantum..., but it's a Fireball "CX" not a Fireball "lct" as yours appears to be. the bottom looks similar, but I was rushing out the door to my kid's little league game, and the printing on the chips is very faint so I couldn't tell, but will look closer tomorrow, w/ high intensity light and magnifying glass and report back. will also try to sleuth my Quantum archives from the "old days" and see if there's any helpful info (if I can find the archives...)

Buzz, that may well work, I've seen a couple of posts online where a slightly different board from essentially the same drive worked.

Ive got a 12 GB Quantum Fireball EX drive from a Smurf.
Might not work, but its here. I just need to pull any info from the drive and am willing to ship the HD logic board out. The 12gb drive logic board is very similar to the 13gb drive.

Also wanted to say thanks everyone.
