anybody know of a good strategy to get rid of the "funk"? Many of the high-tech materials used today can't be washed with harsh chemicals or hot water, which slowly allows the "funk" to get started and to breed.

Oxy-Clean type bleaches and cold water? The oxygenated water should kill most of the bacteria off. The funk comes from bacteria imbedded in the clothing living off the oils rubbed off from the skin from what I have heard.

No hot water or strong detergents allows the oil to build up, and it allows the bacteria to live.

Not being able to dry in the dryer is another cause. The hot and dry air would normally kill off the bacteria.

Any ideas?

I am interested in the info as well. I have been line-drying all of my workout apparels in our somewhat inconspicuous backyard. The sun and heat help somewhat.

yeah, UV does kill bacteria and mildew.

There are some specialty detergents, but they are obscenely priced, and unless the material in question is GoreTex (very strange stuff indeed), I think they aren't warranted.

I use Tide and Oxy-Clean in cold water for the darker stuff and warm for the white stuff, double rinse and then line dry. No funk yet.

Seriously, though. I buy cheap stuff for workouts. Cotton tees at Sam's & shorts at Target.

Back when I worked in a restaurant in college, I found that the only thing that cleaned my kitchen-scented clothing properly was Surf. Occasionally a trip to the dry-cleaners was in order.

Agreed that open-air and sun drying helps the worst offenders.

A lot of the stuff is technical wear, and CoolMax springs to mind.

Bike attire, jerseys and such.

Wash the clothes regularly. Do not let them sit and develop da funk. I use Tide and warm water for washing and line drying afterwards. No funk. This is with both cotton and the new fangled stuff.

Coolmax, Dri-fit, Sphere - you name it, I use it. Haven't had a problem.
