Many of the Fraser Firs were dying as a result of acid rain

Then the fog rolled in after a tumultuous storm:

I believe this is why they call it the Smokey Mountains:

A 10 shot photomerge that I did not trim down to size---it just looks nice the way it is (IMO)

Many of the pine were dying as a result of the southern pine beetle

All I ever really needed to know, I learned from watching Star Trek.

Many of the Fraser and balsam firs have been killed by the balsam woolly over the last 50 years.

There is a beatle that is killing the Douglas firs in WA, OR, and BC. It is killing stands of firs so big that they are contemplating building a wood fired power plant to consume the now dead trees. Really sad.

I believe there are Moths, Beetles and some Worms causing damage to these trees.
I also remember a program from and in Canada where the males of these species were irradiated to produce sterile larvae.

Yes. The Blue Ridge Mountains get their name from the fact that the trees release Isoprene into the atmosphere, causing the blue haze.
