Before I drive to the Genius bar: new iMac won't start

I'm prepping my new sister's 20" Intel iMac for her. Got it yesterday. Came in this morning, and it won't turn on. I repeatedly have tried pressing the powerbutton (located on the left back side). I've held it down for a half second, 1 second, 5 seconds, tried holding it down at different angles. I've unplugged the power cord for 2 minutes. I've tried plugging into another outlet in another room.

I've never used these new G5 iMacs before. Is there another method you're supposed to use to start it up?

Any ideas?

Are you sure the power cord is firmly plugged into the back of the machine? I don't know about the one you've got, but mine was really awkward to get in, and it wasn't making a full connection initially. I know, that's too simple, but it's the only thing I can think of. sad smiley

And, is it an Intel iMac or a G5 iMac? It shouldn't matter, but you described it first as one and then the other. Don't do this to me so early in the morning, please. smiling smiley

whoops. Sorry, it's just a G5, not the Intel model.

I've reseated that plug a couple times. It is firm, but it does go in, flush with the outside.

Well, well. Could be my first lemon Mac. I'll stop by the genius store today.

had one that the cable from the switch/button had come loose from the mobo connector... tech at store had it firing up properly fairly quickly. maybe something else to look at if you're handy with needle nose pliers.

Sometimes it is what it is...
and then there's times when it's really better.

I have a similar thing (power switch only responds intermittantly) happening with my iMac 2.0 17".

Here's an article from Apple that may answer some questions.

[docs.info.apple.com]

I must admit, I've only read the article, haven't tried to open up the back yet. I'm waiting until I can access that page witha second computer, while I follow the procedures. For now, I just leave the 'puter turned on most of the time, and keep trying the power button until it finally works on the rare occasions when it does get turned off.

Before you go? Make an appointment online. Your name will be on a 42" flat panel behind the bar when you arrive.

hold the power button down, then put the plug in. (it's tricky)

let go of the power button, wait 10 seconds, press again.

it's an SMU reset.

Brought the Intel iMac down to the local Apple Store. Genius did some tests, and said, "Bad couple of parts. We'll order them." Left the unit there, should be back by Thursday.

Wow. My first glitched Mac since 1992.

Sounds to me like a bad power supply. The G5 iMac had an issue with this. Apple will take care of it quickly.
