Until you have had a spinal injury, you don't truly know how pathetic the standard pain scale is. Once you get beyond about 6, it should be a log scale.

I'm pretty much required to poll patients for their pain rating every contact. This little piece does a welcome and wonderful job of capturing the inadequacies of the pain scale.

Before I had my back surgery I picked "8" only because I had to leave some headroom for later in life! Otherwise, I would of picked a "10"!

If herniated discs fall into that category, then agree smiley

I didn't think there could be anything that would make me cry out, wince, and collapse to the floor on a regular basis until experiencing the joy of a herniated disc...

I have bulging discs (neck) and am in physical therapy, just got a steroid shot, being seen by Neuroscience department at Swedish Health, doing all this stuff I have to do..and regularly get asked to rate pain, on that scale.

I never say above 7, not because I'm not suffering, but only because of previous experience..
Broken ankle, reset manually by an impatient Orthopedic Surgeon, without painkiller or warning.. horrible kidney stones..blood-curdling migranes...

Things that can make you crawl around on your hands and knees, screaming, crying, calling out the names of pets, long dead since childhood....

After that, the scale is hard to match, by bulging or herniated discs!
