Ban leaf blowers?
Posted by: mrbigstuff

The landscape dudes next door (at a church, no less) have some insanely loud industrial-strength leaf blowers at a db that has to be approaching airport-like levels. If I were trying to get some rest (OK, it's 4:30pm, but still) or even concentrate beyond writing this stupid post, I'd be flipping out.

Ban 'em, and hire more illegal immigrants to use rakes and brooms the way God intended.

i'm trying to figure out if you're having a good day and this is your biggest problem or if you're having a bad day and have found something minor to complain about

In your neighborhood perhaps but the vast majority of people can deal with 'em.

leaf blowers don't bother people, their users do. Don't blame the inanimate object, blame the person weilding it.

Bad Noise Pollution. Quick use of them does not bother me. But around here people use them for 3 hours plus at at time. Then there are 2 to 3 of them. And they start at 7:30 a.m.

Supposedly there are quiet ones, maybe electric powered.

If mick e lived in a neighborhood where this kind of insane crap took place, he would walk over, take the tube end of the blower, and jam it so far up the user's ass that the air would be blowing out of his goddam mouth.

If mick e lived in my neighborhood, he'd get shot in the head trying to take a leaf blower away....
A pointless death, since acting like a human being rather than a petulant jackass, would have resulted in a polite conversation, and the cessation of the leaf blower noise.

My previous neighbor who moved had one of these:

I'm pretty sure the muffler either was removed or snapped off.
He didn't pick the damned leaves up, he just went back and forth across the yard blowing them all to one side, not even into the woods. Every Saturday afternoon. They'd be blown back by the wind by Tuesday.
And he would do it again.
Until the snow got too deep.

Leaf blowers are not worth the trouble. Leaves stick to grass blades. Wielding them is hard on your wrists and arms. I find raking leaves in cool fall days is actually very therapeutic.

Luckily we can just mow our leaves into the pasture beside the house. Find a day with a nice westerly wind
and start at on the west side and just keep chopping and blowing them with the riding mower back and
forth. We do have an electric leaf blower for blowing off the patio, carport and blowing out flower beds.

Stihl makes some pretty quiet leaf blowers but any of those backpack things are for a person with a strong
back. 65 db is pretty low. I bet it's quieter than the more common gas powered string trimmer.

We let the wind blow away our leaves. Works without fail. We had 50 mph winds yesterday.

So you took those pics in my neighborhood? This is exactly what I am talking about. Both types of blowers, and they aim that big on on your car on the street. They do not understand why I hate the blowers on my black car. It leaves hundreds of fine scratches on the paint.

But first they come around with the edger and mower (even when the grass does not need it) then about the time you get back to sleep, they come back around with the blowers. instead of doing one section of the property at a time. Then the next day the condo complex across the street does their landscape, and it goes on all day. The Indian Guy across the street likes to to it at about 7:00 on Saturday morning.

You'll take my leaf blower when you pry it from my cold dead hands! mad2 smiley

Seriously, leaf blowers really make my life easier. Not only do I use them at home, (many, MANY trees in my yard), I also use them in the winter on the sidewalks around my barn. If we get up to a couple of inches of powdery snow, I can use the leaf blower to clear the walks down to dry concrete. If I shovel it, I not only get a sore back, but I may have to drop some salt down too, as shoveling still leaves some residual snow that more often than not freezes.

Very often the landscapers use the leaf blowers, when there is nothing left to blow, just so they look busy. No one wants to rake, clean out flower beds, weed, pick up branches, or cut back ivy. I have not seen a landscaper bend over and do any real labor in a long time. If they can't mow (riding), weed wack it or blow, it does not get done. No hand pruning either. Our landscaping has suffered greatly despite these "improved tools". They will also not bend over to pick up a piece of paper or obvious trash.

Like I said, there is a time and a place for the blowers, and they should not be running for half a day at a time. Also the air is very stinky and polluted while they are using them. Some areas have laws against gas powered blowers, for this reason.

We have lost what used to be called a "gardener". If you want weed pulling and pruning then you have to hire another guy nowadays.

2nd worst thing about them is that they usually blow leaves into the street. I've need neighbors have blower wars. A blows leaves into B's yard, B retaliates. I just use my mulching mower! I don't like mowing lawns much, but I hate raking and picking up clippings more! My father has a reversible blower that vacuum and shreds the leaves.

I have a similar Toro. My problem is that the bag is too small - might be okay on a small lawn.

I have a big yard but not many leaves, so I just use my rider mower that has 2 large grass baggers. For me the trick is to "mow up" the leaves before they get too thick on the ground. Being retired, I can mow the leaves whenever I see they are getting too thick - and the sun is out so they're drier.

In our area there are 2 weekends a year in the fall when you can take leaves/grass trimmings to a local (one block from my house) "dump" area. It's almost free (small donation) and one of the local farmers spreads the mulch on his fields. LyleH
