Steve Jobs quotes got me thinking

There isn't anything said about Steve Jobs that can be said anymore. It is good to know he went peacefully with family at his side.

Since I am not creative enough in word or visual form to come up with a creative tribute, I humbly offer a thought. Let's all use this great technology we have as Mac users to record, quote and celebrate the family and friends we love. Isn't the point of Steve's work to help people do this kind of thing in an easy and elegant way? It has never been easier.

One simple thing I have done is add quoted text to an image of a family member. I plan on adding it to my screen saver on the mac hooked to my old fashioned tv. The slide show has family images, memories and now will have thoughts of family members. I am going to create a picture with the text of my mother and father's accomplishments also, I don't know why I haven't done this before.

Grab a camcorder, voice recorder, camera with video mode and sit down, ask family members about your family history, how you came to be. I have done this in the past year and realize that I owe a great debt to many people. I wish I had done this earlier as 2 of my older relatives have passed on. You never know what impact these recordings will have in the future or yourself.

If anyone has other ideas, please post them here. I would love to hear them.

I have precious little of my grandparents on video beyond a shot or two of them at birthday parties. I have stories in my head (and I pass them on to my kids as often as possible) but I do need to do more.

I have a couple of lengths of video from one particular family gathering at my Dad's house when they talked to me about their childhood, their siblings, and growing up. I also have a bit of my paternal grandmother playing piano.

My maternal grandfather was a trumpeter in New Orleans from his youth; this would be in the 20s, 30s and 40s. I knew he was but I was a kid and so I didn't ask him more -- he died when I was in my late teens from lung cancer; at his funeral I got to meet some of his bandmates from the era, and they were quite pleased I had picked up playing the trumpet. "The stories we could tell you," one said, before another jabbed him in the gut and said, "no, we can't", laughing. We promised to get together to talk one day but never did. Stories and lives lost to time.

Whoa, it's too early to get this melancholy.

"he went peacefully with family at his side"

When I die

I want to go peacefully

In my sleep

Like my grandfather did

Not screaming

Like the passengers

In his car.......

A good suggestion, Cube. Personally, I write stories down. Paper lasts longer than pictures and video.

They are in many ways more personal, that is a good idea.

I'm a grandparent who almost exited two years ago. That I didn't is a tribute to he miracles of modern medicine. That I might exit tomorrow is up to fate.

I absolutely do not want those I eventually leave behind in a state of sorrow. I did what I could with my life and they need to do what they can with their own.

edited twice to satisfy Gutty. Happy unbirthday. I'm almost always late to the party.

About ten years ago, my father, who fought in WWII, wrote out his autobiography, with most of his favorite stories he'd been telling through the years. Sometimes, we'd get a little tired of hearing those stores, even though we knew we shouldn't. Now that he's had a stroke, he doesn't tell those stories any more. That autobiography is suddenly priceless.

Park a camera in front of them and let them start talking. A photo album is a good way to get them started!

yeah, the camera thing is good, but it has to have some context. when you tell them, "lights, camera, action!" they tend to freeze up. I always try to get relatives when they go on and on at the kitchen table. In fact, I bought a Zoom H2 for this reason and to capture my kids' ramblings. so, video is not always necessary.

Hurts like a bastid...

I hope people can find what method is best for them. I offer these comments as an idea after seeing so much praise for Steve Jobs and realizing that maybe we should honor our family this way.

I find the best way is to record conversations at the dinner table. I am very happy to have the stories and hoping to find time and translators to transcribe them.

Good luck everyone.
